It’s Coming Home? Bellingham Magic Sets Up Epic England vs. Argentina Semi-Final Clash

July 13, 2026 Entertainment Queen 0

Grab your pints and clear your Wednesday evening schedule, because the 2026 FIFA World Cup has reached the final four—and Thomas Tuchel’s Three Lions are […]

Now that the dust has finally settled, the adrenaline has subsided, and we’ve all managed to claw back some much-needed sleep after a breathless night of drama, we can look back clearly at what we just witnessed. Make no mistake: England’s 3-2 victory over Mexico in the World Cup Round of 16 wasn't just a win. It was a masterclass in psychological warfare, defensive resilience, and pure, unadulterated grit. Facing the host nation in front of a deafening, hostile crowd at the Mexico City Stadium is daunting enough. Doing it while watching the referee flash a red card to one of your own? That is the stuff of folklore. Here is how a night of absolute chaos turned into one of the greatest England tournament performances of all time. The Jude Bellingham Show For the first 40 minutes, England looked like they were going to cruise. Jude Bellingham didn't just step up to the occasion; he completely dictated it. His first arrived in the 36th minute, a brilliant piece of spatial awareness that silenced the home crowd. Before Mexico could even re-organize, Bellingham struck again just two minutes later, ghosting into the box to make it 2-0. It was a breathtaking introductory spell that felt like a statement of intent. But as any veteran England fan knows, it’s never allowed to be that easy. Chaos, Cards, and the Turning Point Just as the Three Lions looked entirely in control, the script was flipped on its head. Mexico pulled one back in the 42nd minute through Julián Quiñones, breathing life back into the stadium. Then came the hammer blow. A red card reduced England to 10 men, completely tearing up whatever tactical blueprint had been laid out before kickoff. Suddenly, a comfortable march to the quarter-finals turned into a Alamo-style survival mission. When the teams walked out for the second half, everyone expected an inevitable Mexican onslaught. Instead, England dug in. In the 54th minute, Jarell Quansah rose highest to power home a monumental header, restoring the two-goal cushion and giving the 10 men something precious to cling to. THE MATCH IN NUMBERS =================================== Possession: Mexico 59% - 31% England Shots: Mexico 20 - 6 England Shots on Target: Mexico 5 - 5 England The Longest Half-Hour in Football When Harry Kane coolly converted a 60th-minute penalty, it briefly felt like England might miraculously coast home. But a 10-man side playing at altitude against a relentless host nation will always hit a wall. Raúl Jiménez converted a penalty for Mexico in the 69th minute to make it 3-2, setting up a final 20 minutes that aged the entire nation by about ten years. The stats tell the story of the frantic finale: Mexico completely dominated possession (59% to England's 31%) and peppered the area with an astonishing 49 crosses and 20 total shots. Jordan Pickford was forced to be a vocal general from the back, while Anthony Gordon put in an exhausting defensive shift, applying a staggering 38 presses to disrupt Mexico's build-up. England only had 6 attempts on goal the entire match, but crucially, 5 of them were on target. It was the epitome of clinical, smash-and-grab tournament football. The Verdict We’ve seen England squads of the past crumble under far less pressure than this. To hold out against that volume of attacking traffic, under the suffocating pressure of a home crowd, while a man down, is a testament to the character of this group. They left everything on that pitch in Mexico City. As we finally catch up on our sleep on this side of the Atlantic, we can rest easy knowing this team has the steel required to go all the way. Bring on the quarter-finals.
