People buy smartphones for a number of different reasons. Some use their’s for business, some for internet browsing, others for a camera. Some crazy mo-fo’s actually use their smartphone as a telephone for making phone calls! (gasp). But regardless of what a persons primary use for their iOS device is, I guarantee that they will have at least one free game on there. We’ve all been there, a spare five minutes whilst you are waiting for the train or whilst you are waiting for your favourite TV show to start. What better way to fill those spare moments than with a game, right in your pocket, that cost you absolutely nada!
The problem is that iTunes has literally thousands upon thousands of free iOS games for your disposal. How are you supposed to find the ones that are perfect for you? Well, thats easy, the iTunes store has top 25 lists of most download games. Simple. But what they don’t warn you is that the games on the list are possibly the most time consuming, energy sapping procrastination devices known to man! You open one of these games and your spare five minutes turns into a good hour thats disappeared. That five minutes you were trying to kill whilst waiting for the train? Gone. Along with three more trains.

Draw Something
The current champion of time-wasting tools, Draw Something is the ultimate way to show the people you know (and some you don’t) that you are not Pablo Picasso. The idea of the game is to guess the other person’s drawing, then draw something for them to guess, that’s it. There is no winner, if you fail you just start again, there is no way of ending the game. But that is the beauty of it, as it takes away the competition and leaves you with hours of hilarity. Temple Run
The chances are that if you own an iOS device, you will have already fallen into the Temple Run trap, and you are one of the 753 million people to download the game (ok, I made that up, but its probably true). If you haven’t downloaded it already, then you will have saved yourself from literally hours of evil monkey evading, coin collecting, tree-ducking, gap-jumping, temple-running shenanigans. The game is so simple to play that even my 90 year old Grandmother can play it. If you value your free time, this should be avoided at all costs. Procrastination rating: 5/5
Zombie Highway
What is not to love about this games. Does it have zombies? Yes. Does it have fast cars? Yes. Does it have a vast array of guns to shoot said zombies? Yes. And does it involve crashing your vehicle into numerous objects? Yes. The game certainly ticks all the right boxes, and like every other addictive game, the controls are so simple that even an Amazonian tribesman could pick it up in about 30 seconds. As for the game, you are attempting to drive your vehicle down a highway by titling your divide to steer. However, pesky zombies keep jumping on your car and trying to pull it over. You have two ways of dislodging said z-men: 1) crash your car into the various crashed vehicles littering the highway, or 2) Shoot the feckers! Whats not to love about that, right? Procrastination rating: 4/5
Words with Friends
There are two pre-requisites to this game being massively addictive, and they are that you a) can spell, and b) have friends. If you tick both of these boxes then this game can be massively time-consuming. Made by Facebook games giants Zynga, Words with Friends is basically a ripped off version of Scrabble. That is basically it. Add a chat facility so you can trash talk your friend, a store that no one uses, and links to all of Zynga’s other downloadable games and you have a winner. Procrastination rating: 4/5
Homerun Battle 2
Quite simply, this could be the most addictive, free sports game ever to grace the planet Earth. All you literally have to do is tilt your device to aim your bat and tap the screen to swing. That game is so simplistic that you must be thinking it would get old after about 30 seconds right? Wrong. The gameplay is massively addictive and there is a multi-player online version which cranks it up another notch. Customise your player, chat with your opponents, all whilst smashing the stuffing out of baseballs, love it! Procrastination rating: 3.5/5
