The “geek” image is based on a lack of fashion sense, but you don’t want to look like you have no fashion sense, so we’re gonna just borrow elements of the “poindexter” overtly studious image and jazz them up; fashionable with geeky roots.
With this look you don’t actually have to splurge on a whole new wardrobe, because less is more. You can just mix up and customize clothes and accessories that you already have. Geek chic can be mixed with other styles too, you can mix geek chic with other styles as well, like the preppy look, or with urban and boho styles.
You don’t want to look too trendy so be creative and an individual.
Here are some tips for pulling off the geek chic style.
Go for the busy look, simply cram in as many colours, prints, and fabrics as you can, then just throw on a few geek inspired accessories.
Wear clothes inspired by famous geeks, or geeky trends e.g. t-shirts with video game, comic book, sci-fi or computer related logos.
Mix a professional style with casual pieces, e.g. cute blouses or polo shirts with a funky tie, jeans with a tailored vest or a pleated skirt with a woolly jumper.
Experiment with your clothes. You can layer t-shirts over polo shirts, long sleeve shirts, or blouses as well.
You could get some cute and funky eyeglasses; they’re sort of a geek staple aren’t they? Non-prescription glasses are easy to find and a chunky black plastic frame would be perfect for the geek chic look.
Ladies, wear knee high socks if you’re wearing a skirt. Knee length or shorter, but not too short, socks work perfect with A-line, pleated, or pencil skirts. Get them in different colours and patterns for some added funk!
Try a pair of high waist jeans with a blouse tucked in to give you that geek-ish look.
It doesn’t really when it comes to shoes but sneakers work really well with the geek chic look, especially Converse! Oh have I mentioned that my bedroom looks like a converse factory?!
Anything goes as long as the heels aren’t too high. It doesn’t look geek chic when you can’t walk in your shoes.
Accessorize! Geek inspired accessories can be found everywhere, so just get creative with them. Neon accessories are especially geek-tastic!
When it comes to your hair style, it doesn’t have to be complicated or too trendy. If you want to look geeky or even geekier, simple is better. Just work with what you have, even with curly or a straight hair a simple ponytail can be enough. You can add matching hair clips, hair bands in your hair to match your outfit too.
The geek look doesn’t necessarily mean you shouldn’t wear makeup; the trick is to go for the plain look and don’t go too wild. Use a little blush and some subtle lip gloss and if you’re wearing glasses, eyeliner is a great idea.
