Welcome to Sky Atlantic HD

Today heralds the launch of Sky’s latest channel, the incredibly expensive Sky Atlantic HD. The channel will replace the little watched Sky 3 and will be free to Sky subscribers. The most impressive thing about the new channel is its heavyweight line-up, boasting the best shows that HBO has to offer in the States.

The jewel in the crown, so to speak, is Boardwalk Empire. Produced and Directed by Martin Scorcese, staring award winning actor Steve Buscemi and written by the same guy who penned the Soprano’s, the show focuses on the life of Nucky Thomson (Buscemi) as he rules over Atlantic City in 1920’s USA. The show has been held to massive acclaim in the States and personally, I can’t wait to see the performance’s of Buscemi who I’ve been a fan of ever since Reservoir Dogs.

Other shows on the channel include Blue Bloods, staring Tom Selleck and Donnie Wahlberg about a multi-generational police family in New York; Entourage, about an actor and his, erm, Entourage; and How To Make It In America about two twenty-something Brooklyn natives hoping to achieve the American dream. Mix this with classic shows such as The Soprano’s, Curb Your Enthusiasm, Battlestar Galactica and Mad Men and you get a very impressive line-up.

Of course thee channel is aimed at improving Sky’s HD service to make it the little bit more worthwhile to fork over your extra cash. Whilst it looks impressive on paper, its how the channel fills the none prime-time slots which will set it out from the rest. I will be tuning in on Tuesday, if only for Boardwalk Empire. Only time will tell if the channel ends up a success, or another Sky 3.

  1. Sounds great but is it enough to tempt me into Murdoch’s lair and pay out for Sky television?
No. I’d rather watch freesat buy the odd box set of blu-rays and go on holiday with the money I’ve saved.
