Football supporters travelling to away games face a striking postcode lottery in what they could pay over the course of a season, according to new analysis from TrainPal.
The research compared rail fares for away fixtures across the Premier League, Championship, League One, and League Two, and found that where a club is based can have a bigger impact on travel costs than the division it plays in.
Under TrainPal’s standardised fare analysis, Plymouth Argyle supporters face the highest estimated seasonal rail cost at £3,100.74, while Walsall supporters face the lowest at £1,147.98, a difference of almost £2,000.
But while some supporters inevitably face longer and more expensive journeys than others, the headline fare does not always tell the full story. Booking earlier, comparing different ticket combinations, checking whether additional fees apply, using Railcards where eligible and taking advantage of products such as split-ticketing can all help reduce the cost of following a club on the road.
Premier League: Where You Live Can Add Almost £900 to a Season
Among Premier League clubs, Newcastle United supporters face the highest estimated away-day rail costs, with an average fare of £109.05 per fixture and a seasonal total of around £2,071.89.
Sunderland follow closely behind at an average £107.93 per fixture, while Aston Villa supporters face the lowest estimated rail costs in the division, averaging £61.71 per away fixture. That leaves a difference of almost £900 across the season between supporters at the two ends of the Premier League table.
The contrast reflects the geography of the league. Clubs in the North East typically face longer journeys to many away fixtures, while supporters of more centrally located teams can benefit from a greater number of shorter trips.
For many fans, rail nevertheless remains an important part of the away-day experience, allowing supporters to travel together, avoid matchday parking pressures, and make the journey part of the occasion itself.

The Fare You First See is not Necessarily the Fare You Have to Pay
The analysis highlights the scale of the challenge facing some away supporters, but it also shows why the way a journey is booked can matter.
Fans travelling regularly throughout the season can potentially reduce their overall spend by planning journeys as soon as fixtures and travel times are confirmed, comparing alternative ticket combinations, and checking whether additional applicable fees are being added at checkout.
Railcards can also make a significant difference for eligible passengers, while TrainPal customers can use features including split-ticketing to find alternative ticket combinations where available.
Supporters using tools such as split-ticketing and Advance tickets can also access additional savings on eligible rail bookings, helping frequent travellers reduce the cost of journeys over the course of a season.
A TrainPal spokesperson, said: “Away fans are some of football’s most committed supporters, but our analysis shows they are not all starting from the same position. Where your club is based can add almost £2,000 to the cost of travelling to league away games across a season.
“That doesn’t mean supporters should simply accept the first fare they see. Planning ahead, comparing ticket options, checking for additional fees, and using Railcards where eligible can all make a real difference over the course of a season.
“For many fans, the train remains part of what makes an away day an away day. Travelling together, arriving in the heart of a town or city and not having to worry about driving home afterwards are all part of the collective experience. Our role is to help supporters find the best value available when they choose to travel by rail.
“Features such as split-ticketing give fans more ways to save, particularly those making regular journeys throughout the season.”
