Dementia Awareness Week – Remember the person

As you will have seen we’ve been doing a few articles around Dementia Awareness Week and today I want to go through what the Alzheimer’s Society is trying to get awareness for this time.

All awareness of what dementia is and the family is always the main aim. They want you to “remember the person”, this was described by my fellow writer here about how difficult it can be to see a family member have Alzheimer’s.

There is a lot of fear and stigma attached to those who have dementia and the Alzheimer’s Society have come up with ten ways you can help a family with dementia;

1. Treat the person with respect and dignity

2. Be a good listener

3. Be a good communicator

4. Remember that the little things can mean a lot

5. Stay in touch

6. Offer practical help

7. Organise a treat

8. Help different family members in different ways

9. Find out more about dementia

10. Direct people to Alzheimer’s Society for more help and support

You can get more information from Alzheimer’s Society and this includes downloadable leaflets for “remember the person”.

It only takes a few minutes to read. Thank you!
