How to Control Your Anger

First things first, let me get something straight. Anger is not  a bad thing. It is an emotion and if used properly can be a good thing. Too much anger, now that can be a bad thing.

Too much anger can cause arguments and fights over little things. Too much anger changes you; it controls you and makes you do things you wouldn’t normally do. Anger can be constructive or very, very destructive.

With this guide, I will give you 10 tips that will help you to control your anger. After that, it’s up to you to practice them and try and reign in any bad habits you have regarding your anger.

1. Breathe. Turn away, close your eyes and breathe. Inhale deeply and hold for a few seconds, then slowly exhale. Concentrate on your breathing, forget about what’s bothering you. Then, when you’re more calm and in control, turn around and face the problem.

2. Take a walk. If everything gets too much, put on your coat and get outside. Look upwards as you walk, focus on your surroundings, breathe in some of that fresh air. Focus on the problem as you walk; don’t think about how angry you are, think about how you could sort it out. Take as long as you need and go home when you are calmer.

3. Exercise. Tire yourself out with some physical exercise. Put all your anger into your exercise, and when you are done you will be too tired to be angry. It will leave you fresher and with a clearer mind.

4. Write a letter. Instead of going directly to someone and saying something you may regret later, write a letter to them. Let all your anger flow onto the page, and leave it there. When you’re finished, fold up the letter and put it into an envelope. Don’t send it. You’ve let out your frustrations, you don’t feel angry anymore, there’s no need to send the letter. Throw it out, you don’t need it now.

5. Know when to leave. If an argument with someone becomes very heated, remove yourself from the situation. Instead of trying to have the last word, just excuse yourself and take some time out. Come back when you’re calm enough to have a rational discussion.

6. Scream. If breathing doesn’t work for you, then scream. Grab a pillow, bury your face into it and scream. Scream until you’re red in the face, until your lungs are about to burst. Then, when you’re ready, go back and face your problem.

7. Talk to someone. Let out your feelings to someone you trust, someone who won’t judge you. Tell them how you’re feeling, help them to understand what you’re going through. Listen to what they have to say afterwards. You’ll feel a lot better sharing the burden of your anger with someone else.

8. Get enough sleep and relaxation. Not having enough sleep or time to yourself can leave you grumpy and short-tempered. Make sure you fit enough relaxation into your normal schedule to save yourself random outbursts of grumpiness.

9. Smile. If you’re beginning to get really angry, stop and smile. Think of something funny, or a fond memory and smile about it. Even better, laugh. Laughing makes you feel a lot better. Instead of focusing on everything that’s wrong, look on the bright side.

10. Be grateful. Think of something in your life that you are thankful for. When you are angry, focus on this object. It’s hard to be annoyed when you are feeling grateful for something.

Using these tips will help prevent bad situations occurring because of your anger. Remember anger is an emotion that can be tamed by you, and can be used for good purposes. I hope these tips helped.
