The Rise (and Fall) of Samantha Brick

If you’d heard of Samantha Brick before this week then you’re a better man than me…or a Tory.  However, this was the week that everyone would become familiar with this woman due to her penning an article for the Daily Mail entitled ‘Why Women Hate Me For Being Beautiful’.  We might have expected trouble when we saw which paper published it.  Funnily enough, she left out that it was more likely to be because she was an arrogant little so-so than a total stunner.  Anyway, let’s move on…

Samantha Brick, for those who don’t know, is a 41-year-old freelance journalist who has written for newspapers and magazines, produced various TV shows and has recently penned her first novel.  She lives in France with her husband and step-son.

Almost a week ago, Samantha wrote an article about the pitfalls of being beautiful and her own experiences with this.  In it, she speaks of regularly being bought drinks, complimented on her looks and being given free train journeys.  All by men, of course.  She says that women dislike her because she is beautiful and successful and that women are in constant fear that she is going to seduce their husbands.  Since it was printed, the article has caused controversy and resulted in her becoming something of a ‘hate figure’ in the UK.  How far through this piece did you get before googling this magnificent beauty?  If you had not had the fortune to be blinded by this sight for sore eyes already, obvs.  Have you stopped laughing yet?

Now, in the interests of objectivity, let’s consider Ms Brick’s further disclosures that she believes all women take issue with strong, successful and beautiful women out of jealousy.  It’s there that I’d say she has a valid point.  I think it is rather common place to hear women make catty remarks about a woman on the basis of her looks and how successful she is rather than her personality and that a woman higher up the food chain will be disliked for that reason.  That said, after seeing more of Samantha’s personality during her interview on This Morning where presenter, Ruth Langsford barely tried to hide her disgust, who would want to get to know her?!  She was unapologetic and stood by her remarks saying people were mistaking confidence for ignorance. Confidence, she claimed was common in France and all women present themselves in the same way as she has done.  If that is the case, might I suggest that Ms Brick go back to France and take her opinions with her instead of polluting my Twitter timeline with this absolute tosh. Thanks for that, love!

In conclusion, I am more amused than offended by these remarks, being of the male variety but I do find it ludicrous that she did not just keep the article objective instead of waffling on about how much of a hottie she is.  After all, let’s face it, she ain’t all that!

I'm never sure what to write here, you don't want to appear to egotistical, do you?! I like films, music and writing. I'm usually quite opinionated which is why I'm here, I guess!
