With the weather being as sunny as it is, I though a nice summery song would be perfect. I do love this song, I think it feels like a holiday.
Rio is the seventh single from the self titled album. The musical “hook” was produced using an arpeggiator, which is a software tool that can play the individual notes in a chord in a chosen pattern. The unusual sound at the beginning of Rio is Nick Rhodes throwing several small metal rods onto the strings of a grand piano in the studio, although in the song the sound is reversed. The female laughter on the track is from his girlfriend at the time.
The video was shot over 3 days in May 1982 on the island of Antigua. The scene featuring the saxophone player was shot using a tourists camera as Mulcahy ran out of film. Nick Rhodes was very poorly during filming as has since stated he isn’t happy on a moving boat. The lady featured in the video is model Reema Ruspoli.
The song has been covered and remixed far too many times to mention, and I will always love this song and the album. Bonus fact! The saxophonist has also worked with Elton John, David Bowie and the Pet Shop Boys. Impressive.
