Music Monday: Korn- Freak on a Leash

korn

Ooh, little bit of nu-metal to kick off your Monday, why not. This song was a humongous hit for the band, and if like me you spent all of your time between the ages of 13 and 17 watching Kerrang- that is when you were not dyeing your hair pink or buying more studded bracelets, this video was played constantly. Rightly so too, may I add, as it is a very clever and original video.

The video was released on 5 February 1999, and debuted on Total Request Live. It was recorded in LA, December 1998 and directed by Todd McFarlane, who is very well known for his work on comic books- particularly the “Spawn” series. He was assisted in this by Jonathan Dayton and Valerie Faris, who would go on to direct the hilarious Little Miss Sunshine.

The video is a mix of animation and live performance, special effects and clever camera angles, and one Best Editing, Best Rock Video at the 1999 MTV Video music awards, and later received the Grammy Award for Best Short Form Music Video in 2000. The song also won a Grammy Award, and has been used on The Simpsons and in a Puma commercial. Oddly enough, it isn’t one of my favourite songs of theirs, but I do love the very clever video.
