As you’ve without a doubt noticed from all the latest news headlines, bullying is on the rise amongst today’s children and youth. With school back in full swing, it can be nerve-wracking to be a parent wondering if your child is playing a role in bullying—whether it be as a victim, or an antagonist.
Thankfully, studies show that one of the easiest ways to keep your child from either scenario is by teaching your child self-confidence at an early age.
Let me guess, your next question is “how do I do that?” Well—there is certainly more than one answer, but one of the most efficient ways (and our personal favourite) is through a self-defence class like Karate.
Where should I sign my child up for karate lessons?
All large cities, and even a number of small towns will have a variety of options for self-defence schools. Depending on how seriously your child wants to take his classes, prices will vary.
A top notch private school with highly trained senseis and masters can cost upwards of $125 a month, whereas prices at a more recreation oriented school will typically between $40 and $75. Either class style will without a doubt be extremely beneficial to your child’s self-confidence—the difference comes down to whether or no he or she would like a more relaxed or competitive approach.
Also worth investigating, are smaller and private classes that are often run by the older students of competitive schools. In many cases, these are high school students with black belt certification who are perfectly capable of teaching your little one self-defence basics, but at a much more affordable price.
Regardless of where you decide to enrol, don’t forget to ask about a free trial. Kids are fickle, and almost all schools will allow your son or daughter to attend a week’s worth of lessons or more to test the waters and see if they like it.
What does my child need for their first karate class?
One of the best parts about karate is that it doesn’t involve spending thousands upon thousands of dollars on uniforms, costumes, and equipment like hockey, dancing, and other sports. In general, for your child’s first class they will only require a traditional uniform (also called a gi). It’s up to you if you want to invest in other add-ons like special under shirts or sports bags.
Once he or she stars progressing up the ranks to higher belts, they may require sparring gear like shin and hand pads, training gear like hanging bags, and possibly basic karate weapons. None of these should amount to more than $100-$200 total however.
Where can I buy this equipment?
Larger schools will often have these items for sale on-site and at reduced prices for students. You can also find a lot of the above gear at large stores like SportChek, or smaller self-defence specialty shops if you live in a larger city. Lastly, you can go our favourite route and shop online.
