I forgot all about this video, in all its crazy crazy glory. The Avalanches did always have a way with their videos. They are all entirely insane.
The Avalanches are an Australian dance group, and this song was one of their most popular. Although it only charted moderately well, it was received exceptionally well by critics, one of whom called it “A distillation of pure joy from a hundred different songs.” The chorus is sampled from “Everyday” by The Main Attraction- but the song is made up of at least 8 different songs, if not more. I’ve always found it very weird- it’s a kind of beautifully upbeat and shimmering example of the end of a relationship, the main lyric being “Since I left you, I’ve found the world so new.”
The video won “Best Video” at the 2001 MTV Europe Awards. It fits rather beautifully with a song that really doesn’t make any sense, and yet works incredibly well. It’s really rather wonderful to hear a beautiful song about something ending
