Everyone has a guilty pleasure. I can see you now, thinking “I eat peanut butter with a spoon” or “I like to microwave my underwear on cold mornings”, we all have one. All of us.
Sometimes you may find me in the light of a solitary church candle, bobbing my head moodily to Joy Division- Disorder or a nice bit of Ministry. You know me, I like my music dark and velvety.
However, I have a secret love of bouncy, ridiculous, silly lyrics college rock.
This song, however, isn’t as superficial and daft as it may seem- it’s actually about the changing music scene in San Francisco, a descent into heavy use of crystal meth and a need for depraved sexual acts. I just liked the “Doo doo doo!” but it turns out there’s a lot more to it than it seems.
The band are very popular in the United States and are still going to this day, having released their fifth album in 2010. If like me you enjoy a secret bit of bouncy college rock, I recommend Blink-182- Mutt or Dammit, Ben Folds Five- Rocking the Suburbs or Battle of Who Could Care Less and Harvey Danger- Flagpole Sitta (ah, you do know that song, you do! It’s the theme tune to Peep Show!)
From the album: Tattoo of the Sun
