Social media has worked wonders with regard to giving a voice to those who may have been lacking before – but which section of the population has this applied to most? Pets! A huge number of funny, loveable and opinionated animals now have their own social account on Facebook, Twitter and YouTube – and they have taken the online world by storm.
Here are 7 of our favourites:
1. Boo
For those of you not acquainted with the world’s cutest dog – meet Boo. Boo is a seven year old Pomeranian who has captured the hearts of over nine million Facebook fans. Ever since Boo’s owner, J.H. Lee, made him a Facebook page in 2009; he has since been the subject of a series of picture books, starred in an advert for Beats by Dre, named the Official Pet Liason of Virgin America, and appeared in shows such as Good Morning America. J.H. Lee regularly updates Boo’s Facebook page with photos and videos of him and his buddy, Buddy, posing in various outfits all over America.
2. Grumpy Cat
Now that you’ve met the cutest pet in the world, it’s time to meet the grumpiest. “I had fun once. It was horrible.” Tard, better known as Grumpy Cat, shot to fame after featuring in one of this year’s most popular memes, and this scowling cat is now found on various social channels over the internet. In fact, Twitter boasts two Grumpy Cat accounts – the real and the parody – collectively totalling slightly fewer than one million followers. The official Grumpy Cat also has its own brand of merchandise available, including soft toys and clothing.
3. Weird Horse
Joining the Twitter ranks in July 2011, Weird Horse now has over 185,000 followers on its Twitter page, where he amuses followers with casual horse-observations, such as “Just mooed by mistake” and “Just tried to Sky+ the X Factor final but couldn’t pick up the remote because of the hooves”, his own take on songs, “Never gonna give ewe you up, never gonna neigh goodbye, never gonna trot around and desert hooves”, and interactions with the other animals on his farm, “Just kicked a pig into a bush lol”. As well as having his farmer, Baffled Farmer, on Twitter too – Weird Horse also has his own range of merchandise, from mugs to t-shirts.
4. Gus the Fox
Foul-mouthed feral fox, Gus, takes to Twitter and entertains his followers with remarks that you could only ever expect from a disease ridden fox that lives in London. “Dear @David_Cameron. My mate told me that he once saw you punch a horse so hard that you broke your arm. Any truth in that?” It’s not just David Cameron who gets abused by this evil fox, but Piers Morgan, Simon Cowell, Lord Sugar, and just about everybody else! No one escapes Gus’ vehemence. He has over 105,000 followers on his Twitter page, and also has his own blog and has recently released a book.
5. Sockamillion
This stray cat was found in Boston in 2004, and three years later he obtained his own Twitter account. Since then, he has amassed over 1.3 million followers. Sockamillion, also known as Sockington, has been featured in The Independent and on the MSNBC news site. His owner, Jason Scott, has received many offers asking for Sockamillion to endorse various products, but has so far turned them all down. He does have his own range of t-shirts though, and an online fanbase – Socks Army.
6. Kauto Star
One of the best jump-racing horses of our time, Kauto Star, naturally got himself a Twitter account as he bowed out from his National Hunt career. His Twitter page surfaced in April 2012, days before the Grand National. Kauto Star won 19 Grade A races, including the King George VI Chase five times, and the Cheltenham Gold Cup twice. As he moves into his new career as a dressage horse, with British eventer Laura Collett, Twitter has allowed him to keep over 6,500 followers up to date – as well as talking with Collett’s other competition horses, all of whom have their own accounts.
7.Common Squirrel
Common Squirrel possibly has one of the most boring Twitter accounts in the world, yet there are still over 100,000 people who wait in anticipation to see what he does next – be it “hop”, “blink blink”, “stare” or even “run run run run”. There’s not much more I can say about this social media star to be honest!
