The ultimate guide to swapping out luxury ingredients (+ infographic)

There’s a time when we all fancy treating ourselves and what better way is there than making ourselves a luxury meal from a gourmet recipe, but just because we’re treating ourselves doesn’t mean we still can’t be a little bit frugal.

The following infographic from QuickQuid looks at how we can swap out those pricey ingredients for something, well, a little less pricey. So, the recipe asks for vanilla beans? Swap them for vanilla extract. You will get the same aroma and a very similar flavour but you’ll also be spending half the amount you would if you were buying the beans.

Truffles are notoriously an expensive ingredient, so if you have a recipe that asks for those luxurious English black truffles then you should consider swapping them out for porcini mushrooms. The mushrooms might not share the same intensity as the truffles but when the mushrooms cost less than a 10th of the truffles, it’s sort of something we can get accustomed to.

It might sound hard to believe but you can also be frugal and eat caviar. Some recipes may ask for Sturgeon caviar, which comes from the egg of a Sturgeon fish, but due to overfishing – the fish has become an endangered species which has upped the price of this ingredient so a good, cheaper alternative to use would be Black Lumpfish caviar. Whilst caviar connoisseurs might not deem it ‘true’ caviar, it is more widely available in stores and therefore makes it a very cheaper swap – costing around £49 for a kg rather than the £2000 per kg price tag that Sturgeon caviar has.

Have a look at the infographic below and see what else we can swap out from these luxurious recipes so that when we treat ourselves, we don’t have to feel as guilty as we would if we were buying the original ingredients.
