Users Sweat it out with Kayla Itsines as her fitness app makes over £40 a minute

In a bid to find out who is winning in the app race, the UK’s leading gym operator PureGym have investigated how much money a selection of the most popular health and fitness mobile apps make per minute in the UK.

The data found that Sweat: Kayla Itsines’ Fitness, the nutrition and workout app featuring Kayla Itsines, Sjana Elise Earp and Kelsey Wells, is the biggest money-maker on the list with £40.84 made per minute.

SweatCoin, which saw a surge in popularity at the start of the year, was estimated to be making £2.47 a minute, working out at around £2,579 a day. The continued success of the app will mean that the sum is likely to keep on rising throughout the year as more people sign up for its selection of premium options.

Interestingly, all the apps featured on the list are free for users to download on mobile app stores. Developers rely on advertising and in-app purchases, such as bonus content and subscriptions, to make their money.

Celebrity power also helps when it comes to making money. Strava Running, heavily used by Olympians and champion athletes, makes £9.48 a minute (£9,897 a day). The app allows users to connect through the sports they love and try to beat their personal best. In comparison, Nike+ Run Club is estimated to make a mere £84 each day.

Other apps making money include:

MyFitnessPal, £32.12 a minute
8fit, £30.43 a minute
Weight Watchers, £22.57 a minute
RunKeeper, £3.16 a minute
MapMyRun, £1.58 a minute

Jodie Maguire, Senior Brand and Communications Manager of PureGym, said of the results: “We’ve seen a big rise in people using fitness apps alongside their activity in the gym. People are learning the best workout routines at home or on their commute to work, and then putting them to action at the gym and sharing their progress online.

“We are seeing that these apps, alongside progress trackers and social media platforms, are really helping to keep people motivated to reach their own goals and make their gym sessions more effective.”
