Let’s be honest we all watch more TV than we really should but here’s a way of getting into the kitchen with them – inspired TV recipes;

GAME OF THRONES – The Guest Right Pie

This GoT inspired pie is stuffed with rich flavour and even Jon Snow would happily share a portion with Ramsey Bolton.

Ingredients

Filling

  • 250g thick cut bacon cut into slices
  • 900g chicken cut into cubes
  • Salt, pepper, and savoury herbs to taste
  • 3 tbsp of butter
  • 170g Chopped carrots
  • 1 onion, chopped
  • 1 parsnip, chopped
  • 250g mushrooms
  • 300ml beef stock
  • 300ml beer
  • 3 tbsp plain flour

Crust

  • 525g plain flour
  • 120g unsalted butter
  • Hefty pinch of salt
  • 2 eggs
  • Variable water or milk, add gradually to bind the pastry together

Method

Filling

  1. Preheat oven to 200oC
  2. In a large frying pan, cook your cubed chicken over a medium heat until it’s golden brown and cooked through. Set aside in a large bowl, and leave any fat in the pan.
  3. Add the sliced bacon and cook until each piece is browned. Remove the meat to the same bowl as the chicken and set to one side.
  4. In the same pan melt 3 tbsp butter before adding your carrots, parsnips, onions and mushrooms. Let them cook gently before adding a splash of stock and a pinch of salt. Cover and let it simmer for 10-15 minutes until the veg softens.
  5. Once cooked, pour everything into the large bowl with the meat.
  6. In the pan, melt the remaining 3 tbsp of butter and add the flour, stirring until it’s golden in colour. While gently stirring, gradually pour in some of the broth from the vegetable mix before adding beer and more broth until you have a nice, thick sauce.
  7. Pour the rest of the meat and vegetables back into the pan and let everything cook nicely until the whole mixture is thickened.
  8. Finally, remove your pan from the heat and allow everything to cool.

Crust

  1. To get your pastry dough started, combine the flour and salt, before rubbing the butter into the mix. Stir in the egg and add just enough liquid to bring the dough together without making it too wet.
  2. Divide the dough into two pieces, one slightly larger than the other. Roll out the larger piece of dough to about 1/8” thick.
  3. Carefully drape this over your pie pan and fill with the cooled meat filling.
  4. Roll out the remaining dough and cover the top for the lid. Trim the excess dough around the edges and crimp them down. Decorate and brush with egg to glaze.
  5. Bake in the oven for 45 minutes, or until the crust is just golden. Next, brush the pie with remaining egg wash and return to the oven for another 10 minutes then remove.
  6. Allow to cool and rest for 10-15 minutes before digging in.

STRANGER THINGS – Upside Down Waffles

Transport your taste buds to another realm with these waffles that have travelled from the upside down. One-half of these waffles captures the dark and mysterious side of Stanger Things, while the other perfectly captures the sickly-sweet taste of 80s nostalgia.

Ingredients

Waffles
75g melted butter
40g caster sugar
1 pinch salt
1 tbsp vanilla
3 eggs
225g flour
2 tsp baking powder
1/2 tsp baking soda
225ml buttermilk

Chocolate pudding
300ml milk
3 egg yolks
15g corn starch
2 tbsp butter
40g sugar
1 tsp vanilla
100g chocolate chips

Decorative goop
4g powdered gelatine
2 tbsp water
1 tbsp thick cream
2 tbsp golden syrup

Decorations

170g dark chocolate
3 tbsp white chocolate
3 tbsp golden syrup
Black, brown, green, and yellow gel food colouring
Maple syrup for waffles
350ml whipped cream

Hundreds and thousands

Method

Waffles

  1. Whisk all of your dry ingredients together in a large bowl. Make a well in the centre and pour in the wet ingredients before whisking them together.
  2. Using a waffle maker, cook the waffles until golden brown. Then allow them to cool.

Chocolate pudding

  1. In a saucepan, whisk together all your ingredients apart from the butter and chocolate.
  2. Once smooth, heat through on a low heat until it’s thick and bubbling. Make sure you’re constantly stirring to avoid it sticking. Cook for at least a minute while boiling to remove starchy flavours.
  3. Place the remaining chocolate and butter into a glass bowl and pour your hot pudding mixture on top. Whisk together until smooth. If you notice any lumps at all, just run your mixture through a sieve to push them out before adding a few drops of your yellow gel colouring.
  4. Next, cover with cling film and leave to cool.

Goop

  1. In another bowl, sprinkle your gelatine into water and allow it to sit for 5 minutes before adding the remaining ingredients.
  2. Next, microwave your gelatine for 15 seconds at a time until smooth and melted.
  3. Place your silicone or non-stick baking mat onto a baking tray. Pour a few tablespoons of the mix onto your mat and spread it out so it’s nice and thin. Stick in the fridge to set.
  4. Repeat the process for each stack of waffles you plan to make.

Decorations

  1. In a large bowl, melt 170g of dark chocolate. Measure out 3 tbsp of golden syrup and stir it in until it starts to seize up. Avoid over stirring or the fat will separate. Wrap it up and let it cool for 20 minutes.
  2. Fill a large piping bag with your chocolate pudding. Now, pipe a layer of chocolate pudding between two waffles like a sandwich.
  3. Repeat until you have as many stacks as you need. Three stacks is perfect.
  4. Using another piping bag, pipe dollops of whipped cream around the top edge of your waffle stacks. Add plenty of hundreds and thousands.
  5. Make 3 golf ball-sized balls from your chocolate dough. Roll each piece into a beautiful slug shape. Add them to each of your waffle stacks as you see fit. We like to put them on one half to represent the upside down.
  6. Next, melt your white chocolate and add a few drops of your yellow food gel. Use a toothpick to add spots to your slugs.
  7. For a disgusting detail, give your slugs a syrup glaze to make them appear shiny.
  8. For the finishing touch, take your gelatine slime sheets from the fridge. Carefully tear pieces off and start draping them over the slug halves of your waffles until they look really gross.
  9. Lastly, drip some regular syrup over your normal waffle halves for a beautifully traditional look – add some drops of black food colouring to syrup for the upside-down side.

  • 50g shortening, to grease your hands

Method

Cake

  1. Preheat oven to 150ºC.
  2. Whisk together flour, cocoa powder, baking soda, and salt in a medium bowl.
  3. Next, in a large bowl, beat butter with an electric mixer until creamy before adding sugar. Continue to beat until it’s light and fluffy.
  4. In a separate bowl, whisk together eggs and vanilla. Add this egg mixture to the butter-sugar mixture and beat for 2 minutes on a medium speed.
  5. Whisk together sour cream and milk in another small bowl.
  6. Next, on a low speed, alternate gradually adding your flour mixture and sour cream mixture to your butter-egg mix. Start and finish with flour mix. Add the food colouring during this stage.
  7. Pour your batter into a heatproof glass bowl until two-thirds full. Keep your leftover batter to one side.
  8. Bake slowly for 90 minutes
  9. Let it cool and remove it from the bowl. Level the top with a knife. Place the cake, flat side down on a cake plate.
  10. Use a spatula to frost the cake with a thin layer of frosting.

Raspberry blood

  1. In a saucepan, whisk everything together except for the colouring and bring to the boil over a medium heat.
  2. Once boiling, add in the gel food colouring until thoroughly mixed before removing from the heat.

Marshmallow fondant

  1. In a microwave-safe bowl, place your marshmallows and enough water to evenly coat them.
  2. Microwave for 30 seconds and then stir. Repeat until the mixture is smooth.
  3. Sift half your sugar into a large bowl and form a well in the centre. Add the melted marshmallows before sifting the remaining sugar on top.
  4. Grease your hands to avoid any marshmallow sticking to you before kneading the sugar and marshmallow together. Keep working it until you it has the consistency of soft toffee.

Decoration

  1. Roll your marshmallow fondant into ½-inch thick strings and weave them across your cake to make the appearance of a brain.
  2. For the finishing touch, use a brush to evenly coat your brain cake with the raspberry blood

WESTWORLD – Western inspired chilli

This is no imitation, this one-pot pulled pork chilli has all the ingredients to whisk you away. In this show, there are no limits to what you can do – why not turn up the heat and chow down with this far-out western dish.

Ingredients

2 415g cans of kidney or baked beans

2 400g cans chopped tomatoes

400ml tomato juice

2kg pork shoulder

2 cloves garlic, minced

1 onion, diced

2 jalapeños, seeded and diced

1 tbsp chilli powder

2 tsp cumin

1 tsp smoked paprika

1 tsp oregano

1 tsp salt

½ tsp cracked black pepper

2 tbsp brown sugar

Method

  1. Super easy this one, first place your pork shoulder into a slow cooker and add all of your ingredients.
  2. Give everything a stir and cook on a low heat for 5-6 hours. If that’s not quick enough, cooking at a high heat for 3-4 hours works but this means that your pork won’t be as tender. Keep checking back and give everything a stir to stop it from sticking.
  3. Once cooked, serve up in bowls with bread or rice for an authentic western feel.
