I was sent some products to review by Plantpal in return for an honest review.
I was sent the Plantpal 3 Watering Globes and Plantpal Watering System as a keen gardener and plant lover I was intrigued to find out more about these. I was surprised by the size of both even though I had seen the measurements online beforehand but I definitely had expected the globes to be smaller for sure.
Watering Globes
As I mentioned above I was surprised by how big they were but they need to be able to water a plant for up to 2 weeks. They are 19 x 15 x 9.8 cm in size. So you fill the globe up with water, making sure that you have made sure that the tip of the spike (the wick) is wet and put it into your plant pot. That’s it and you can just leave it to water your plant whilst you’re away on holiday.
I tried these out when we obviously had summer and our temperatures in the UK were majorly fluctuating each day and one full globe of water has never lasted more than 5 days. When it was much cooler it didn’t last longer than that either and I don’t have this in full sun either which would obviously conserve it more.
I’ve seen some really pretty glass globes but I would be worrying about them shattering so these plastic ones are such a good alternative. I really love the idea of these and I’ve tried them in various plants and sizes of pots and I couldn’t get them to last more than a week. Which for me works fine as a weekly top-up but I wouldn’t rely on these for longer than that time, especially during the summer.
Watering System
This watering system probably was the one I was suspicious of because it looked huge and needed a big outside pot to get the system to fit into. Also I knew that I had to take it out for winter so I needed it to be in a pot that was relatively easy to get it out from. It also needs a round pot which is fine as I tend to use round pots anyway.
Much like with the globes there is a wick at the bottom of the system that you need to get wet when you first put it in. These wicks have to be replaced so I’m guessing that when you remove the system for winter that it would be a good time to do it. I did have trouble at the start with getting the topper to the system to stay on, it kept popping off and I did message Plantpal to see if this was a regular thing but I then really pushed it on and it stayed put. It’s been fine ever since but if it happens to you, it just needs to be really pushed.
I put this system into our new lavender pot so we needed it to be in the sun mostly and although I knew that this wouldn’t conserve the water in the system as much as it being in the shade, I have been topping it up every 10 or so days. I can see that this one would totally work being moved into the shade and would last for 2-3 weeks. Definitely more out of summer season. It has been boosted a little by rain showers so that’s a plus to know that the system isn’t going to overwater your plant either.
Overall I was more won over by the watering system as I could really see the benefits of using it. I’m unsure on the globes and think I need to see through the colder months about how long they would last for holidays etc. The major plus with them is that because they are plastic they are better than the glass ones for safety (no shattering glass) reasons.
