Taking the pedal to the metal is an adrenaline rush, and motorcyclists love the thrill of becoming one with their machine. Biking is also a nice way to enjoy some fresh air during COVID-19.

Yet, this hobby does come with inherent risks. Motorcyclists are the most dangerous form of transportation on roadways across the world, so taking steps to ensure your safety and protection on the road is essential.

If you’re already a biker or considering the motorcycle lifestyle, here are some motorcycle safety tips for smooth riding.

1. Protect Yourself With Proper Gear

Avoid head injury by protecting your head and brain with a helmet 100% of the time. But helmets aren’t the only protective gear you should purchase. All of these items are proven to reduce injury motorcycling:

  • Helmet
  • Motorcycle jacket
  • Boots
  • Gloves
  • Eye protection
  • Body armor

2. Be Aware of Your Surroundings

You might do everything right on your motorcycle, but another driver could make a costly mistake. Remember that car and truck drivers don’t always remember to look for motorcycles as they drive, so stay alert and ride defensively. Your bike’s mirrors are a great way to anticipate sudden movements from other drivers on the road.

Also consider the surface you’re riding on. Wet or slick roads are especially dangerous, and you should also keep an eye out for shiny pavement, gravel, or sand.

3. Ride in Open Areas

An estimated 61% of fatal motorcycle accidents happen in urban areas. Intersections are especially dangerous and cars, pedestrians, road detours and even buildings can pose a risk.

Rather than weaving through busy street traffic, take your bike to an open area with ample space to enjoy the road. Put dangerous blind spots and grid locks in your rearview mirror and soak in the fresh air and scenic views.

4. Don’t Bike Under the Influence

Operating a motor vehicle under the influence is illegal and dangerous — especially on a motorcycle. Never drink and ride because it will impair your ability to predict and react. Biking hungover has a similar effect so steer clear of alcohol or other substances for 24-48 hours before you operate your motorcycle.

These safety precautions help you stay safe as you ride, while also protecting other passengers on the road. For even more motorcycle safety tips and bike maintenance reminders, check out this Dolman Law infographic below:
