Less than a third of UK couples are talking about their sex lives in bed

A survey amongst UK residents who are currently in a relationship has revealed that less than a third (23%) of UK residents talk about their sex lives with their partner once the lights go out. Instead, 56% spend this time discussing their friends & family, whilst a further 53% simply discuss their days with one another.

The data comes from a new campaign created by British bedding specialists Soak&Sleep, who conducted a survey to find out what UK couples talk about beneath the sheets, in a bid to find out if ‘pillow talk’ really is as sexy as its connotations suggest.

Across the country, there is a distinct lack of bedtime sex conversations between couples. However, London coined itself the UK’s sex talk capital with 41% of respondents that are currently in a relationship stating that their sex lives were the topic they talk about most often in bed, followed by 30% of couples in the North East,

The survey also revealed those at the other end of the scale, with couples in Scotland (11%) and Wales (7%) discussing their sex lives with their significant others far less than other regions in the UK.

So, if UK couples aren’t talking about their sex lives in bed, what are they talking about instead? Here are the top five bedtime conversation topics:

  • Friends and Family – 56%
  • Your day – 53%
  • Weekend plans – 45%
  • The future – 40%
  • Life admin – 32%

Whilst it is clear that pillow talk amongst UK couples is far less steamy than we’d imagined, the survey found that despite what they’re talking about 50% of those currently in a relationship think that talking to their partner before they sleep helps them get a better nights sleep.

Soak&Sleep customer sleep consultant Rebecca Leanard said, “Talking before you go to sleep is a great way to unload all of your thoughts and feelings from the day, so it is great that a large majority of couples in the UK are unloading and talking about their days to one another before drifting off. Going to bed with too many things on your mind can have a negative impact on your quality of sleep, so talking about them beforehand is a great way to ensure your mind is clear before hitting the hay.

“When a busy day of working has kept you from spending quality time with your partner during the day, having a good conversation before bed is a nice way to reconnect and share the day with each other.”
