The summer holidays are here, and with 72% of Brits still preferring staycations to trips abroad in 20231, and with searches for ‘dog friendly holiday ideas’ increasing by 150% in the past 12 months, Canine Cottages has teamed up with Emma, who runs the dog-friendly social media account paws.explore.north to reveal her travel tips for a dog-friendly staycation.
How to care for your dog when travelling
Sharing her best tips in her TikTok video, Emma reveals what you can do to make your dog feel safe and secure when you’re away on a staycation.
How to care for your dog in the car: “If your dog isn’t used to travelling in the car, start with shorter journeys and gradually build up the duration before the big day. You can give your dog their meals in the car too, so that they associate it as a good place to be. If you have a long drive planned, stop every few hours at least so that your dog can stretch their legs and decompress.”
- It’s important to practise road safety, also with your dog. Make sure your dog is in a crate in the back of the car that is large enough to house their bed and some toys. This can distract them during the drive, and keep you focussed on driving.
- Another tip is to include a piece of your clothing with your scent on it if your dog can’t see you. This can work to relax your dog and make it calmer in their environment.
Arriving at your accommodation: “When you arrive at your accommodation, let your dog have a good sniff around and a run in the garden if it’s safely enclosed. Bring their bed and some of their favourite toys or chews to help them feel at home. Stick to their mealtime routines and give them lots of cuddles!”

- If you’ve got a nervous dog, or your dog is in unfamiliar territory, it can be wise to embark on quiet walks for your dog to roam on a long line, but also to avoid strangers and unfamiliar dogs.
Spending time in restaurants: “Use a lightweight settle mat that you can easily bring with you to cafes and pubs when you’re away. Practice your dog settling on the mat when you’re at home so that when you’re away they recognise it as a signal to be calm. Call ahead to book a table and ask if you can sit in a quieter corner if possible. Lots of dog-friendly places are really accommodating.”
- A smart trick is to take your dog for a walk which will help your dog release energy before going into any restaurants.
- Bring your dog’s favourite chew toy and treats to ensure they’re kept entertained and hydrated during your time inside.
