How to practice self-care during divorce

If you’re getting divorced, you’re likely going through a difficult and emotional time. There’s a lot to process and it can take a toll on you both mentally and physically.

That’s why it’s so important to practice self-care during this tricky period. Here, we offer several ways you can take care of yourself as you navigate your divorce.

Spend time with loved ones

We’re social creatures by nature. The CDC says that “when people are socially connected and have stable and supportive relationships, they are more likely to make healthy choices and to have better mental and physical health outcomes. They are also better able to cope with hard times, stress, anxiety, and depression”.

Throughout your week, take the time to meet up with people that fill up your cup. This could be family members or friends that can help boost your mood, offer support and provide a listening ear when you need one. You could head for a walk in your local park, grab a coffee or head out for dinner.

Get professional support

There are many things to consider during divorce, from splitting assets to making arrangements for children. With lots of decisions to make, you may benefit from getting professional support from a family solicitor with experience in divorce.

They can listen to the unique circumstances of your split and guide you through the process. This will give you the peace of mind that you’ve got skillful professionals around you whocan help you get the best outcome for you and your family.

Move your body

One of the most effective ways to relieve stress and anxiety is exercise. This is because “physical activity may help bump up the production of your brain’s feel-good neurotransmitters, called endorphins” says Mayo Clinic. It can “improve your mood, help you relax, and lower symptoms of stress and anxiety”.

There are many ways you can be active during your divorce, but the key is to choose something you enjoy. This could be walks in nature, swimming in your local pool, playing tennis with friends or practicing yoga.

Eat nourishing food

It can be tempting to binge junk food when going through a difficult time. However, swapping your takeaways andunhealthy snacks for more nourishing options can help to support you if you’re upset, stressed or anxious.

Mental health charity Mind explains that nutrients from healthy foods can “help to keep us mentally and physically healthy”. For instance, “diets higher in protein” can help your brain “produce chemicals called neurotransmitters” to “regulate your thoughts and feelings”. Try to eat a well-rounded diet with a range of fruits, vegetables, proteins and healthy fats to support your mind and body.

While going through a divorce can be incredibly difficult and challenging, there are ways you can help support yourself during this time. Remember that you’re not alone and that there are plenty of people who can help you throughout the process.

Reach out to loved ones, professionals or charities to get the support and confidence boost you need to move into the next chapter of your life with strength.
