When legends bite back.

Lemon Ziegler wants to escape rural Devil’s Elbow, Pennsylvania to attend college―but that’s impossible now that she’s expected to impersonate the town’s lake monster for the rest of her life. Her family has been secretly keeping the tradition of Old Lucy, the famed (and very fake) monster of Lake Lokakoma, alive for generations, all to keep the tourists coming. Without Lemon, the town dies, and she can’t disappoint her
grandparents . . . or tell her best friends about any of it. That includes Troy Ramirez, who has been covertly in love with Lemon for years, afraid to ruin their friendship by confessing his feelings. When a very real, and very hungry monster is discovered in the lake, secrets must fall by the wayside. Determined to stop the monster, Lemon and her best friends are the only thing standing between Devil’s Elbow and the monster out for blood.

For readers who enjoy Harrow Lake by Kat Ellis, House of Hollow by Krystal Sutherland, Dark and Shallow Lies by Ginny Myers Sain, and The Lake House by Sarah Beth Durst.

Excerpt

A Misfortune of Lake Monsters is a young adult horror novel in which high school senior Lemon Ziegler is tapped by her family to secretly continue to impersonate the town’s lake monster—but then she discovers a real lake monster hungry for human flesh. What’s useful to know about this excerpt is that it picks up after Lemon’s first encounter with the monster, but her best friends Troy and Darrin are still in the dark:

Lemon slicks past me, leans against the lockers. Her blue shirt’s electric against the pink paint. Her messenger bag swings and hits, banging hard.

“And she rises from the goddamn dead,” Darrin says.

Okay, maybe he did hear some of those rumors.

Lemon rolls her eyes, then turns to me, offers a sweet smile. “Sorry about yesterday. I was a little out of it.” Something flickers on her face, quick and then gone. Something angry.

“What are you doing here?” I say.

“I didn’t want to be at home, not with . . . besides, Pappap has determined there’s nothing wrong with me,” she says dryly. “Perfectly healthy girls go to school.”

“You nearly got k—”

She flaps her hand. “But I didn’t.”

Darrin laughs. “The hearty Ziegler stock strikes again. I should have known. You scoff at danger. If I didn’t know better, I’d swear you were part of a vast plot to make me feel like a wuss.”

“Trust me. I scoffed. Troy will attest to that.”

“Wait.” His brows rise. “You were there, Troy?”

I shake my head. “I caught the aftermath.”

“That adds a little something to the drama,” Darrin says, eyeing me. I can see his brain whirring, looking for an opportunity to make this into something it isn’t. Finally, he says, “Is Ike convinced Old Lucy’s going to rise up and eat a boat of tourists?”

I open my mouth to mention the bear, but Lemon says, “He’s pretty excited about the idea if it means more business.”

Darrin barks a laugh, divebombs Lemon for a quick hug. “Well, hooray for capitalism. I’m awfully glad you managed not to die.”

The bell rings. Darrin throws a wave, takes off down the hall.

She watches him go.

“You didn’t tell him it was a bear,” I say.

Her voice is flat when she says, “It wasn’t a bear.”
