Garden fences can often be overlooked when it comes to adding colour, with many homeowners often just opting for its original colour.
But paint expert Chris Morgan, Senior Product Manager at Ronseal, has shared three paint colours that can help boost your outdoor space.
1. Light green
Softer shades of green such as sage can help create a tranquil space in an outdoor garden helping to camouflage structures. Since green is abundant in nature, green fences help to visually extend the garden helping to make your garden appear larger than it actually is.
2. Light grey
Light grey is one of the most popular choices for garden fencing as it complements a wide variety of different garden styles and planting. It also helps to create a contemporary and clean garden environment which can be further enhanced through outdoor furniture sets and fire pits.
3. Light blue
Cooler paint shades such as light blue help to create a more spacious feeling whilst also adding some depth to the space. Blue also brings a sense luxury and modernity to an outdoor space. Blue shades can also make a garden appear larger as they can mimic the shades of the sky.

The different tones debunked
Chris also shares his insights into the three different paint tones and how each of these can be used within an outdoor space to create a different mood and effect:
- Darker tones – Charcoal and black oak absorb light and create a cosier and more private/intimate garden space. They are also excellent for highlighting greenery and colourful planting.
- Natural tones – Such as greens and browns can help to camouflage fencing, making it blend into the natural environment and the surrounding plants. These colours can also make a garden appear larger than it is by hiding the boundaries.
- Neutral tones – Lighter colours such as beige and warm stone are more reflective to light, helping to make a garden appear bigger by blurring the outer boundaries. These colours help a garden feel more expansive and open.
It’s also important to note that not two gardens are the same. It is always recommended to do a colour patch test before proceeding to make sure you’re fully happy with the finished result.
Property expert gives his views
Jen Beal, Director at Redbrik, has also shared some insights on how garden fence colours can make a dramatic difference to a garden.
“2024 has definitely seen more people moving towards darker shades, but rather than opting for black, we’d suggest something softer like charcoal grey, which can actually enhance the perception of space, making a compact garden feel bigger.
“Extremely dark colours can absorb the light and make spaces look more enclosed, so if you have a slightly smaller garden but still want to stay on trend, opting for lighter variations of greys and blues is a good compromise.
“Choosing muted, earthy tones that you would find in nature is a good option, as they will complement the outside space rather than dominate it. These also help to create a serene, welcoming space and help to enhance the natural appeal of your outdoor offering.”
