From football and baseball to basketball and ice hockey, the options are comprehensive for sports-loving Americans. Alongside watching various forms of entertainment, such as television shows and movies, taking in some slam dunks and cheering on touchdowns is a popular pastime for so many people in this part of the world. But what are America’s most popular sports?
Well, as we’ve already mentioned, there are certainly plenty of exhilarating sporting contests for the average American to get behind during a typical year. While specific sports tend to be more popular than others in certain parts of the country, there are some general findings which suggest that American fans do have their overall favourites. So, in no particular order, let’s take a look at them below.
American Football (NFL)
While Brits love their version of football, Americans have a football game of their own to passionately follow. Whether it’s through watching a college game or a match-up in the NFL, it’s a sport that draws fans in every season. The Super Bowl is the main event, though, with around 112 million or so fans tuning in every year. Likewise, around 40 million fans participate in fantasy football. Throw in the huge sums of money being earned in the sport and it’s big business. In fact, the NFL generates around $18 billion annually and projections suggest that it could grow to $25 billion by 2027. Additionally, the likes of tailgating and the different forms of media fans can engage in are vast, making American football arguably America’s most popular sport.
Basketball (NBA)
Offering end-to-end entertainment and featuring some of the world’s most skilful athletes, basketball’s popularity is entirely understandable. Fans are always attending the big games, it’s featured heavily on television; basketball jerseys are popular fashion items; fans share views on social media and back players and teams to succeed with the latest NBA odds, and there are hundreds of well-made podcasts and YouTube channels solely dedicated to the sport. Additionally, the average NBA Finals viewership is usually between 15-20 million, it’s played in schools all over the country, while an increasing amount of international players, such as Luka Dončić, also highlight the sport’s growth outside of America.
Baseball (MLB)
A sport that has witnessed plenty of iconic players over the years, such as Babe Ruth, Hank Aaron, and Mickey Mantle, baseball is adored all over the country. A bat-and-ball game with an unbeatable atmosphere, it’s well-supported by the American population. Even outside of the country, teams like the New York Yankees have become household names and global brands. Events like the World Series still bring in around 11.8 million viewers a season, while people of all ages play the sport in various States all over America. While baseball is lagging behind football and basketball in terms of its popularity, it still has a strong following.

Next up is ice hockey, with fans regularly sitting down to watch the fast-paced, end-to-end action unfold between some iconic teams. While it isn’t played as much as basketball and football, ice hockey still draws in viewers for the major events. For instance, the Stanley Cup Finals garner around 12.41 million viewers every year, while the sport is said to generate around $5 billion in revenue annually. Ice hockey jerseys are also seen all over America, while podcasts like Puck Soup and video games like NHL 24 are enjoyed by hockey-loving American’s everywhere.
