Have you ever been belting out a song you’ve had on repeat, only to discover that you’ve been singing the wrong words all along? If the answer is yes, you are not alone. In fact, this is so common that it has its own term – ‘mondegreen’ – which refers to the misinterpretation of a song lyric that completely changes its meaning.
To identify the songs that confuse listeners the most, Preply, who provides online English classes, analysed online forums and articles to create a list of songs famous for their lyrical confusion. They then ranked these songs based on factors like vocabulary diversity and depth, lyric readability and words per minute. Additionally, they used an AI transcription tool to assess how accurately the lyrics could be deciphered.

With the lowest readability score of just 85, even AI struggled, accurately transcribing only 63% of the lyrics. The song’s most famous mondegreen is its opening line, “Blinded by the light, revved up like a deuce, another runner in the night”, which is often misheard as “wrapped up like a douche when you’re rollin’ in the night.”
Coming in second is Jay Z and Alicia Keys’ ‘Empire State of Mind’, a fast-paced track clocking 158 words per minute. The lyric “In New York, concrete jungle where dreams are made, oh…” has been bizarrely interpreted as “In New York, concrete jungle, wet dream, tomato…”. A high percentage of unique words, at 43%, only adds to this confusion.
‘Saint-Tropez’ by Post Malone rounds out the top three, despite its high readability score of 97. A frequently misheard lyric is the line “I’ve been doin’ what I want since fetus”, which is often mistaken as “I’ve been doing what I want since phoenix”.

Language expert explains why we commonly mishear song lyrics
Yolanda Del Peso Ramos, language expert at Preply, shares why some artists are more difficult to understand than others:
“Strong regional accents can make some artists harder to understand, even for native speakers. Additionally, the music genre plays a role – faster-paced music like rap can make it hard to clearly listen to individual words.”
“Listening to songs, like the ones in this list, can be a great way to learn English by regularly exposing yourself to the vocabulary and pronunciation. However, be sure to correctly learn the lyrics to avoid any confusion that may be caused by these common mondegreens. Correctly understanding the lyrics can enhance your language learning experience and help you better grasp the meaning and context of the songs.”
