World Book Day is one of our favourite dates in the school calendar. It’s all about celebrating stories, imagination and the joy of reading – but let’s be honest, it can also sneak up on us! If you’re looking for easy World Book Day costume ideas that don’t require weeks of prep or a last-minute panic order, you’re in the right place.
These ideas are simple, recognisable and mostly made from clothes and bits you probably already have at home. I’ve also got a handy guide for making a kids’ cape here: https://www.dailywaffle.co.uk/2011/10/how-to-make-a-kids-cape/ – perfect for lots of these characters.

The key to an easy World Book Day costume is keeping it simple. Think about one or two standout features – a cape, a hat, a prop or a pair of glasses – and build the outfit around that. Most teachers (and kids!) just love seeing creativity and enthusiasm rather than perfection.
Hopefully this list gives you plenty of quick, stress-free inspiration. And remember, a homemade cape can transform almost any outfit into a superhero, wizard or fairytale character in minutes. Happy World Book Day!
