Dietitian Shares 5 Key Nutrition Tips to Boost Post-Operation Recovery
Lisa Stubbs, Dietitian from Tonic explains that it is important to eat well whilst recovering from an operation, “Recovery after surgery is a period of increased nutritional demand, where the body requires consistent, high-quality fuel to support healing, repair, and the gradual return to strength.
1. Eat protein at every meal to aid healing
Protein helps repair tissue and maintain muscle strength during recovery. Include sources such as eggs, fish, lean meats, dairy, or plant-based alternatives throughout the day.
2. Focus on “healing foods” rather than restriction
Recovery is not the time for dieting. Nutrient-rich foods containing vitamins and minerals, especially vitamin C, zinc, and iron, support the body’s natural healing process.
3. Don’t underestimate hydration
Drinking enough water supports circulation, digestion, and energy levels, all of which are vital during recovery from surgery or injury.
4. Keep energy intake balanced while activity is reduced
Eating too little can slow recovery, while overeating may lead to sluggishness. Aim for balanced meals that include carbohydrates, protein, and healthy fats.
5. Include anti-inflammatory foods in your diet
Foods such as oily fish, berries, leafy greens, nuts, and whole grains may help support recovery by reducing inflammation and supporting overall wellbeing.
Lisa concludes, “Whether someone is rebuilding following a procedure or preparing to safely resume training ahead of events such as a marathon, nutrition plays a fundamental role in how effectively the body adapts. The focus should be on balance, not restriction, ensuring adequate protein for tissue repair, nutrient-dense whole foods for recovery support, and steady hydration to maintain overall physiological function. Ultimately, good nutrition provides the foundation that allows movement and rehabilitation to be both safe and sustainable.”
