The home cooling habits most of us think help during a heatwave — but actually make it worse

Brits sweating through another sleepless night are being urged to stop making some simple mistake that could be turning their homes into ovens.

With temperatures soaring across the UK, millions are battling stuffy bedrooms, sweltering living rooms and restless nights as the latest heatwave takes hold.

But Heat Management Expert Jamie Burns, from Ailsa, said keeping your home cool doesn’t have to mean blasting expensive air conditioning or buying the latest gadgets.

Jamie spends his working life helping businesses control temperatures inside large factories, where excessive heat can affect comfort, productivity and energy bills. He said the same principles can help ordinary households beat the heat.

“When your home feels unbearably hot, it’s easy to think there’s nothing you can do until the weather changes. But that’s simply not true.

“Most people unknowingly let huge amounts of heat into their homes every day, then spend hours trying to get rid of it. It’s a bit like leaving the front door open in winter and wondering why you’re cold.

“I know how miserable heatwaves can sometimes be. Nobody enjoys trying to sleep in a bedroom that feels like a sauna or spending the evening stuck in a house that’s hotter than it is outside.

“The good news is that a few small changes can make a surprisingly big difference.”

1. Stop sunshine turning your home into a greenhouse

Leaving curtains open all day is one of the quickest ways to overheat your home.

“The sun is effectively heating your house from the inside. Once that warmth gets trapped indoors, it’s incredibly difficult to get rid of.

“Close curtains or blinds before the sun reaches the window, not afterwards.”

2. Don’t leave windows open all day

It feels like the obvious thing to do, but it can actually make your home even hotter.

“If the air outside is warmer than the air inside, all you’re doing is inviting more heat into your home.

“Throw windows open first thing in the morning and again later in the evening when the temperature drops.”

3. Turn off the hidden heaters

Your oven, tumble dryer, games console and even your TV are all pumping extra heat into your home.

“During a heatwave, every appliance you don’t use helps keep temperatures down.

“If you can avoid using the oven and cook something cold instead, your house will thank you.”

4. Make your fan work smarter

Fans don’t cool the room, they cool you.

“Place a fan near an open window during the evening to help pull cooler air through the house instead of just pushing warm air around.”

5. Think ahead, not afterwards

The biggest mistake people make is waiting until the house already feels hot.

“Managing heat is all about getting ahead of it. Once the warmth is inside, you’ve got a much harder job on your hands.”

Three surprising hacks that actually work

Freeze your hot water bottle

Swap hot for ice cold and take it to bed with you.

“It’s a brilliant low-cost cooling pack.”

Put your pillowcase in the freezer

Half an hour is enough to make climbing into bed far more comfortable.

“It won’t stay cold all night, but it’ll certainly help you drift off.”

Hang a damp sheet by an open window

As water evaporates, it naturally cools the air moving through your home.

“It might sound old-fashioned, but it’s a trick that’s been around for years because it works.”
