If there is something that I learned from working as an employee for a large company is that issues will always be there. And you know the saying, “it is not just what happens but how you respond to what happens that determines your life”. Well, I actually learned that the environment sets a lot of the how-to-respond thing, and since many of the toughest battles of the day occur at your boss’ office (not because you have problems but because that’s the nature of your boss’ office), here are 5 top office decorating ideas that will make things smoother and contribute to get a solution.
This can be also a great advice for you to consider for when you have your own office, my friend. The things I’m about to suggest are not only for decoration purposes, but also to add functionality and flow to a conversation.
A clean and organized place
This is by far the most important aspect of any office. You want things to be well organized as well as to have a clean and fresh aroma in the air. This by the way is not one of the 5 things I’m sharing with you here, this is a must-have for you before even thinking in having a cool office where you and a client or employee (if you’re a good business person you’ll know that your employees are far more important than your clients) can sit to have a conversation.
A clean and organized office tells a lot about you. What is the message you want to send to people? This is the question you should think about every time you leave a messy office. If you ask me, I like to say: Hey, I’m a clean and organized businessman, I run things here and I do it with order.
1. Decorative items
Now that your office is clean and organized, it is time for adding some of your own taste. Something that I consider to be amazing for this is to add a few decorative items on a shelve that is behind your chair. These decorative items can be any souvenir from your previous trips, or maybe some of your favorite action characters, like Marvel or Star Wars. You may think that this could be perceived as childish and immature, but in reality, it sends the message that you are a cool, real human being. This lowers the tension in a tough conversation and can also help to spark conversation for a 1-on-1 meeting.
2. Quotes
I love quotes, I think these can add a lot of value to a work space. It’s not important if these come from famous people or not, quotes can always bring light to any situation, also, your employees will tend to relate you with whatever quote you have on your desk or office, so be sure to add something that represents you, the last thing you want is to have a quote about punctuality and be the last person to arrive at the meetings. Think about getting a few quotes and frame them to hang them on the wall, this will definitely set an impression.
3. Gadgets
Syma S107GI personally love these ones. Having non-related to work gadgets is always a great idea. Many people tend to be nervous at face-to-face meeting with a boss, so it is actually a good idea if you have something like a stress-ball or a neo cube to help them funnel their stress. My personal preference is to have a few remote control helicopters because I love them, I actually have two small RC helis on my home desk, I know these devices are great and I love to read some of the best RC helicopter reviews online and then purchase those that I like the most.
I think these devices are great because they spark conversation, also, I find great moments of fun and relaxation with them when I need to clear my mind and come up with new ideas.
4. Portraits

5. Interesting Books
This is a very personal choice, but I’ve seen that most managers have the typical books of leadership, business, problem solving, certifications, and many other titles that actually aren’t functional for a conversation, especially a sales conversation. I’m a business person, and if you ask me, I like to have conversations that lead me to make more money, and the best results that I’ve had for this is by having books that are interesting and questionable enough to be at your office.
For instance, what about having the book “The Secret”, people would definitely be interested in asking if you actually believe in the Law of Attraction, and believe it or not, most people are shy to talk about those topics because they think only few people believe what they believe, but you must remember that, The Secret for instance, has sold over a billion copies around the world. These books have triggered conversations for me that ended in closing deals, but only because the person resonated with me after I spoke about my personal thoughts of the Law of Attraction (which actually exists).
Start to implement some of these Office Decorating Ideas
Those are my 5 top office decorating ideas for a functional work space. As I described at each section, these have resulted to be great resources for me and my clients. I’m only recommending these because I think they’re not just about style but also about making things happen, and if you think about the “how your respond to what happens” part of the saying, these will definitely help you and your invitees to respond better at any given situation that is being developed in your office, even a tough one.
My question for you is this: How are you decorating your own office? Have you considered the functionality part of your office decorating ideas? Let us know your thoughts about it.
