As the UK is eased out of lockdown, many of us will be contemplating taking our cars back out on the road. Whether it’s heading back to work or planning a long trip to see family and friends, drivers will need to ensure their vehicles are fit for purpose
In 2018, 33% of accidents caused by vehicle defects were due to defective, illegal, or under inflated tyres. As such, Tyres on The Drive sought to find out if the nation could roll up their sleeves and change a wheel on their own.
Here’s a guide for how to change a tyre;

- Apply the locking wheel nut key. Unscrew the lug nuts with the wheel brace by turning it ¼ to ½ counter-clockwise.
- Place the jack underneath the vehicle frame alongside the tyre that’s flat.
- Raise the vehicle until the flat tyre is about six inches above the ground.
- Unscrew the lug nuts.
- Remove the flat tyre and place somewhere safe.
- Mount the spare tyre onto the lug bolts.
- Tighten the lug nuts by hand.
- Use the jack to lower the vehicle.
- Tighten lug nuts with the wheel brace.
- You’re done!
