Karate is the most popular of the five new Olympic sports in the UK

Despite 13yo Sky Brown’s recent bronze medal win in the newly-added Olympic sport of Skateboarding, it seems that Karate is the most popular of the new sports, based on the monthly Google searches of Brits. While Skateboarding sees the most searches globally (1.7 million per month), in the UK interest in the sport is limited to only 5,400 Google searches monthly according to research compiled by Martinhal Family Hotels and Resorts.

Skateboarding has had a resurgence during the Pandemic – the biggest spike in interest since the Tony Hawk era of skateboarding films and videogames of the early 2000s. Why? According to www.skateboardgb.org it’s not your typical young-male skateboarder causing the spike, it’s females and young children taking up the sport. This can be evidenced with the amount of skate-related videos on TikTok – the social media platform of choice for the Gen Z generation – with 12.5 BILLION video views for videos uploaded with the hashtag #skateboarding, and a whopping 18.1b for the tag #skate.

Martinhal Family Hotels and Resorts has designed a full calendar of activities to keep kids aged 6 months to well into their teens occupied while the parents enjoy the rest of what both Martinhal and the Algarve have to offer. The bike pump track at Martinhal Sagres is the perfect spot for kids to live out their Olympic fantasies of being the next Charlotte Worthington or Declan Brooks (especially relevant now search volumes for “mountain biking” have reached more than 200,000 per month), and the surfing opportunities along the Algarve are some of the best in the world.

Alongside the full-roster of kids club activities, each of the Martinhal properties also offer full creche and daycare facilities for parents staying at the resort, ensuring kid-free time is possible for every parent who wants it.

From now until October 8th, Martinhal Family Hotel and Resorts will offer one night free for every 4-nights booked. Book now!
