From the club to the commute, everyone has a certain song they can’t help tapping their feet along to. According to music experts, the characteristics of these go-to songs say a lot about someone’s personality.
From Beyoncé to the Black Eyed Peas, these are some of the most iconic songs that get us on the dance floor – and what your go-to song says about you.
1. Single Ladies (Put a Ring on It) | Beyoncé
Independent, social, supportive
This sensational pop hit is a must-play in any dance environment, and it’s sure to get all the ladies on their feet (single or not)! If you can’t help but move to this whopping 193 BPM song or bust out that iconic choreography, you’re a sure social butterfly. As someone who values independence and holds strongly to your identity, you’re comfortable with who you are – all while being the first to support and encourage your loved ones to explore their own identities.
2. Hot in Herre | Nelly
Confident, smooth, flirtatious
If this 107 BPM song gets you grooving in the club, you certainly have confidence in your body and your movement. Your intuitive movements on the dance floor mean others can’t take their eyes off you. You’re also charismatic and probably a bit of a flirt, thanks to your confidence.
3. Just Dance | Lady Gaga
Drama-free, extroverted, candid
As Gaga sings herself, you’re certainly here to Just Dance when this 119 BPM song comes on. You like the best of both worlds when it comes to a night out. You’re down to mingle as long as there’s space and time to dance your heart out! You’re all about drama-free fun with the people you love and who won’t judge your moves, but instead, cheer you on.
4. Say So | Doja Cat
Trendy, articulated, cool
Gen Z – we’re looking at you. If you find yourself moving along to this 111 BPM song, you’ve got confidence in the movement of your body. You’re more likely to take a delicate yet articulated approach to movement. You’re definitely the friend who’s up to date on all the latest fashion trends, and you probably spend more time on TikTok than you’d like to admit.
5. In Da Club | 50 Cent
Intuitive, loveable, entertaining
It’s either your birthday – or you’ve got a natural ear for rhythm and movement. You’re always celebrating your people, making you the life of the party and a great friend for support. The most surprising thing about the people who jump up when they hear this song is that they’re actually amazing dancers by nature! Whatever your go-to move may be, you look like a pro if it’s along to this 90 BPM song.
6. I Wanna Dance with Somebody (Who Loves Me) | Whitney Houston
Sensitive, genuine, gentle
At 119 BPM, if this is your song, you’re sure to start dancing like no one’s watching. You’re a true romantic at heart, and your personality lights up every room you enter. While you may not be the best dancer per se, people can’t help to watch you move with such fun-loving energy. You’re definitely the kind of person who sings in the shower and you’re a sucker for rom-coms.
7. Pour Some Sugar On Me | Def Leppard
Eye-catching, fiery, impulsive
For those who can’t help to dance to this 88 BPM classic, we’ve got two words to describe you: main character. You’re self-confident in your eye-catching nature, and you can’t deny that you love the attention you seemingly always get. In your friend group, you’re the bold one – the type of person who can talk to anyone about anything, always chooses “dare” over “truth,” and everyone always recalls your presence on their most memorable nights out.
8. I Gotta Feeling | Black Eyed Peas
Optimistic, lively, sincere
You know the night’s “gonna be a good night” when the DJ puts this 2009, 128 BPM hit on. As someone who is probably reserved at first, you eventually open up as an undeniably loveable and optimistic person. Securing that Uber home is the last thing on your mind. Instead, you’re looking to keep the night as lively as possible. As for your dancing, jumping up and down is most likely your go-to.
BLOCH dance experts teamed up with the host of Danceteria REWIND DJ Rafe Gomez to reveal what the song you can’t help but dance to says about who you are.
“Two mathematical areas that inspire people to dance are the BPMs of a song and syncopation,” said Gomez. “The higher the BPMs and more complex the syncopation, the more interesting the sonic messaging, and the more inviting the songs are to inspire foot, hip, [and] booty movement.”
According to Gomez, if you’re more likely to find yourself on the dance floor when you hear a song of lower BPM, you’re more confident, expressive, and (generally speaking), a better dancer. If you jump on your feet to a high BPM song, you’re always up for a good time, don’t care what others think, and you’re certainly the life of the party.
