Why This One Decluttering Tip Could Transform Your Home This May — According to a Pro

York-based professional organiser and decluttering expert, Cher Casey, PhD, is urging Brits to use one effective decluttering trick to organise their homes this spring.

May is the perfect time to reorganise the home, but it can sometimes feel a little overwhelming. For those who don’t quite know where to start Cher Casey, PhD, professional organiser and decluttering expert at The Mindful Organiser and advisor to Jackson Woodtuners, recommends mindfully editing belongings to reflect your current lifestyle.

Cher said,

“Much of what we have in our homes reflects past chapters of our lives because we don’t often edit our belongings. Taking the time to consider if items align with who you are today and what you want to move towards can be a powerful act of self-care. Instead of rushing, this part of the process encourages reflection on why you’ve kept things, if they still add value to your life,  celebrating those treasures, and releasing what no longer serves you.”

Growing interest in decluttering services and hacks

There has been a growing interest in home decluttering, with Google searches for “decluttering services near me” increasing 350% in the past 5 years, and “Decluttering help” searches are up 60% for the same time period. In addition, “Home decluttering” and “decluttering tips” are up 20% YoY, and spring is a great time to get started, particularly over the long May bank holiday weekends, where Brits benefit from an extra day off.

Cher continues,

“I take a people-centred and emotions-based approach to exploring clients’ individual struggles, goals, and routines. Together, we consciously edit belongings, celebrate what is loved, and create bespoke, maintainable systems that make homes easier to maintain. I am a big believer that our homes should be sanctuaries, a place to relax, recharge, and spend time doing what we love.”

Discussing common ‘problem’ rooms, Cher adds,

“Hallways and entryways are the first thing you see when you get home, and the last thing you see when you leave. As such, they are spaces that can instantly boost or drain you. Giving them a bit of TLC can have a tremendous impact on how you feel in your home, starting from when you step in the door. Ideally, items in this space should be kept to a minimum, and only things that are required and logical should be housed here.

“These are high-traffic areas, and so are natural catch-all areas that can quickly become cluttered. Especially for families where the bottom of the stairs can become a dumping ground. Many things accumulate in entryways that don’t belong there, but instead are collections of random things that have been dropped and not put away.”
