The transfer window has shut, as far as I am aware no footballers have engaged in sexual activities with anyone else’s wife or animals; there was one managerial casualty but it was West Brom so it only concerns about 500 people; and apart from that nothing major has happened.
We have been treated to another batch of pointless international friendly matches featuring players who would rather be playing as themselves on FIFA 11 in their comfort of their gold lined homes. It is not just the lack of passion, desire and effort by the England team that annoys me, it is the fact that we have to tolerate the feckless and witless Adrian Chiles while we watch. Here is a man who looks like he should be shut safely away in someones loft rather than presenting a national television programme and it can only be assumed that he is employed under a care in the community scheme. Just to put the icing on the cake, ITV tend to treat us to Gareth Southgate as well. A man so ridiculous that after missing a vital penalty for England in a shoot out he actually parodied himself in a pizza hut advert. He probably only did it for the dough (Ed – Boom Boom). I did enjoy the Home Nations cup though, I definitely support that as a venture, pitting teams against each other in a competitive set of fixtures as opposed to the normal nonsensical games, chosen only to fulfil the Fifa window in the calendar and hated by all the players and their clubs. In some ways it is better that England aren’t involved so we can watch without prejudice.
The managerial casualty at West Brom is puzzling at best, The Baggies currently lie 17th in the table but have actually played some good football and been unlucky on a number of occasions. Curiously the board have decided the best way to ensure their survival is to sack the manager that had got them to the Premier league in the first place. A bit like getting out of your lovely warm car that has driven you smoothly to the petrol station and climbing onto a dogs back hoping that you will be delivered safely home. The board have hired Woy Hodgson to keep them in the Premier league and on form this should be a sure-fire way to get them relegated. Unless agent Woy weally was completing a mission from Sir Alex at Liverpool and intentionally did a poor job to keep them out of the Champions league next season.
One manager that has seen a rise in fortunes is that funny looking old lady at Liverpool, Mrs Dalglish. Kenny started the game against Chelsea with 3 centre backs, a move seemingly taking the game back into the 90’s, but luckily for the scousers Carlo Ancelotti was stunned by the tactics and without Ray Wilkins by his side to explain the ancient art of wing backs he was rendered powerless to stop them. That young lady Torres was well worth the £50m Chelsea paid for him too. So Dalglish has gone from a tactical dinosaur to a genius in the space of a week, without changing a thing.
Manchester United were finally beaten, by Wolverhampton Wanderers. In athletics terms it’s akin to Usain Bolt losing a race against a cheese grater, but Wolves worked hard and closed down all over the pitch. And in the usual way that teams raise their game against United you can expect Wolves to lose 3-0 this weekend and normal order will be restored. Still it’s something they can reflect on next season on that long coach journey to Scunthorpe.
West Ham have won the race to be the new tenants of the Olympic stadium in 2012 so now in true West Ham fashion they will almost certainly be relegated this season and again next season and be playing against Lincoln in front off crowds of 1,300. Spurs will probably get over their disappointment in customary fashion too, expect Harry to sign three midfielders in the summer, whether he needs them or not.
