Meditation can change brain structure in 8 weeks

Every single morning involves me taking time to meditate. This started about 6 months ago, it’s part of my routine and if I don’t do it first thing in the morning I notice I’m tired and lack energy. It did not come easy and I gave up many times before finally I could do it.

There has been a new study by Massachusetts General Hospital that shows that the brain changes its structure after just 8 weeks of meditation—including an increase in grey matter in the part of the brain associated with learning. The participants would meditate for on average 27 minutes each day. The study found;

“The analysis of MR images, which focused on areas where meditation-associated differences were seen in earlier studies, found increased grey-matter density in the hippocampus, known to be important for learning and memory”

There were also changes in the empathy and stress regions of the brain. One of the reasons I wanted to be able to meditate was that I’m a worrier and I do tend to stress out sometimes, I have found that I don’t as much as I used to. Some of the “worries” I still have are really silly things that I now tell myself off  or more importantly don’t waste my time over.

I’ve read that a lot of people meditate in their taxi, to escape the hustle and bustle of the outside. I’ve never been able to do this (yet!) I always seem to get the chatty taxi drivers! A little bit of hush please, this girl is trying to meditate. Thank you!
