When undertaking any sport, apart from consulting your GP regarding the suitability of the exercise, it’s also very important to wear the right gear. This is especially prevalent if you’re going to do an impact sport. The right shoes will give you cushion support, balance and auto-correct any natural faults we have eg foot rolling in or out, fallen arches etc. If you don’t wear the correct shoes you are potentially opening yourself up to injury.
Any good sports shop will have trained their staff to give you advice on what shoes/outfits are suitable for the sport. They are also trained to provide for a budget, so don’t be afraid when you’re shown the all singing, all dancing trainer at £***, say No! my budget is £*-£**. There are a variety of stores that can dress you from head to toe and there are others that specialise in orthotic sports shoes that are ‘made to measure’.
There’s all weather, breathable bits of shiny kit, there’s even your t-shirt and jog bottoms bought from the local supermarket!! What you need generally is something good for your feet, in my opinion, something that will protect your shins/knees from impact. After that you can go as ‘sporty’ or casual as you want. We’ve all seen the Lycra clad bodies, but if that’s not you, don’t let it stop you from joining in and getting fit/healthy.
Get yourself down to your local sports outlet, it might just trigger a spending spree and as you look around, it might introduce you to a sport you hadn’t even thought of before. Trust me, you may go in overwhelmed by the choice on offer, but the staff are there to assist (get sales) so they’ll be eager to help. ;D
