The iPhone 5: Another Media Frenzy Coming Soon!

It’s the most wonderful time of the year– Apple is letting hints drop about its new, fancy iPhone 5 coming this fall. Only this time, it’ll be without Steve Jobs leading the campaign, who resigned as CEO of Apple on Wednesday. Please hold your breath.

Considering Jobs’ declining health, this news isn’t really, well, news, but it’s still newsworthy. If that makes any sense at all.

Truthfully, I was only going to comment on the hype created about new Apple products across the world, but the news about Jobs changes the whole game. His resignation, I think, is just another reason everyone will be tuning in to see how Apple handles the promotion of its new iPhone. Another way to get everyone talking during the next few weeks about what the iPhone 5 will offer. And most importantly, from Apple’s standpoint, another way to convince everyone to buy it and break previous sales records.

Ironically, or not so much, it’s also just another reason for me to go on about what I originally intended: the hype Apple continuously creates for its products.

This is a topic I’m fascinated by– Apple and, formerly, Steve Jobs’ abilities to make people all over the world drool over new gadgets. Literally drool. I may or may not be referencing myself on that. Kind of embarrassing. Well, guess that means I shouldn’t admit that I don’t even own an iPhone either. Oops, my bad!

The thing that gets to me, though, is why are we obsessed? Why are we always willing to drop everything and run when a new iPhone is available? Especially considering the prices and the frequency at which we are expected to jump on board. It always seems like every 9 months there’s a newer, better iPhone to replace the one you already invested your year’s salary into. Plus, the more I think about it, the more I can honestly say it’s madness. Though that doesn’t mean I’m not going to be an Apple fangirl and follow live twitter feeds when Apple’s new CEO, Tim Cook, reveals it. As you can tell, I have a complicated relationship with iPhones and other Apple products.

I guess what I’m trying to get to is this: Apple has already made technology so cool and exciting that it doesn’t need to do anything else. By now, Apple knows that it’s king. Everyone who wants the new iPhone has already decided to wait in lines for it. And they don’t even know when that is yet, which is rather astounding when you think about it. So, why do they even still try ? Especially now, since the media frenzy surrounding the iPhone 5 has been multiplied with the news of Jobs’ step down.
