I love the Human League. They’re the type of band that gets bandied around a lot because everyone on the planet knows this song and nearly everyone likes it. The Human League were a much more intelligent, in-depth and revolutionary band than people give them credit for. Having said that, I chose this because firstly I like the song and secondly I like the video.
The groups management agreed to put quite a large budget into the production of this video as they admitted that a slick-looking video was great for promotion. The video was filmed in Slough and was based loosely on the film “A Star Is Born.” Director Steve Baron was heavily influenced by French cinematography and dark images, hence why the clapper board says “Le League Humaine”.
As a final word on this, Oakey hated this song and didn’t even want it released, saying it was just rubbish album filler. It’s nice when people are wrong, if it leads to huge success!
