Water plays a vital role in every human body. We know that it’s responsible in flushing out toxin and by doing so, we are giving our skin a favor by making it healthier, more glowing, and younger-looking. So before you skip on that glass of water or that evening ritual of washing your face, take in mind these different ways water can significantly improve your skin.
Moisturize and Add radiance
A known benefit of water is its ability to moisturize the skin. Hydrate yourself from the inside by drinking 11 8-ounce glasses of water a day, as suggested by the most recent water-intake guidelines frm the Institute of Medicine. This will help wash out the toxins in your body. You can also use moisturizing products to help “lock” moisture into your skin.
Skin-firming
Drinking adequate amount of water can actually help in tightening and firming your sagging skin. By flushing out toxins and providing moisture, water can keep your skin firm, tight, and supple. It can also restore the skin’s elasticity and firms the skin tissues. Water therapy to detoxify and tighten skin can be achieved by opening the pores and then following it with a cold-pool plunge to sock the skin. This is something you can do at home, according to Eva Scrivo, a New York City-based beauty expert and host of Beauty Talk. You only need to soak a washcloth in a steaming-hot water, then lay it over your face (so better make sure it’s bearable enough). Then wash your face with a cleanser and rinse with water, then splash your face with cold water about 15 times.
Acne-prevention
Employing varying water temperature is an effective means of treating acne-prone skin. Dr. Andrew Ordon of the TV show, The Doctors, said, “Cool water is actually a bit of an anti-inflammatory.” To remove dirt, oil, and makeup, you need to wash your face with hot water, as this will open the skin’s pores. To rinse off, use cool water to shrink pores and stimulate circulation. Another way to use water to busts breakouts, according to skincare specialist and licensed aesthetician Renee Rouleau is to, “Drink hot lemon water first thing in the morning to reduce bacteria internally, lessening breakouts.”
Smooth lines and shrink pores
Howard Murad, MD, the author of The Water Secret: The Cellular Breakthrough to Look and Feel 10 Years Younger, said that wrinkles are less noticeable when skin cells are well hydrated. “Water naturally plumps skin, fills in fine lines and wrinkles, and boosts a lackluster complexion,” he said. It is therefore recommended to use a moisturizer with humectants as it can help attract water to skin cells. Dr. Murad also shared that products containing hyaluronic acid are helpful because this acid creates a moisture barrier, helping it hold on to water longer. To shrink pores, Renee Rouleau gives a tip on using water before applying makeup. By splashing cold water to your face, your pores naturally shrink, which makes foundation look and stay smoother.
Corrects complexion
As was mentioned by Dr. Murad, water naturally boosts a lackluster complexion. Consuming the right amount of water means healthier skin as washing out the toxins from your system can clean your face and body, resulting to better complexion.
