As anyone who lives in the UK can testify, these days there isn’t much of a difference between winter and summer. We’re just as likely to get a month of wet and windy weather in August as we are a sunny spell in the middle of January. Our temperate climate and the Gulf Stream mean that camping is possible in the UK all year round. This is especially true when you consider the advances in camping equipment and technology over the last few years.
The great thing about camping during the autumn and winter months means that you go prepared for the worst. You’re not expecting great weather so there is never any disappointment if it does rain. On the contrary, when you do get a dose of unexpected sunshine it is all the more of a pleasure.
Winter camping may not yet be as popular as the summer variety but more and more campsite owners are noticing an increased interest in winter nights under canvas. But if you are going for a spot of winter camping, there a few tips and essential equipment that you need to remember.
Fire is essential
There are around 130 winter campsites in the UK that allow campfires and the
importance of some heat and light on a chilly winter night can’t be overestimated. Make sure that you have some dry wood or things will be dim and smoky, and always have plenty of matches and kindling handy.
Wind direction
Check the wind direction before you set up camp. Try and shelter your camp behind trees or use whatever you can as a windbreak. The last thing you want is a howling wind to rip down your tent in the middle of the night.
Get the right equipment
Summer sleeping bags are fine in temperatures of 10˚C and higher but in the winter you’re going to need something a little bit warmer. Special cold temperature bags are available, as are quality tents that provide better protection from the cold and wind. If you’re not sure if you, or your equipment, can handle the cold, then why not try a trial run one night in the garden? If your kit isn’t up to scratch then maybe it is time to invest in some new gear.
Stuff yourself
Winter camping is no time for diets or eating sensibly; you need to stock up on calories as your body is going to need it to fend off the cold. Having a little bottle or flask of something strong will also help you to see off the cold before bedtime. We recommend fine single malt but whatever floats your boat.
Be sensible

Winter camping can be great fun and there is something great about taking on the elements and winning. However, you should never get too carried away and bite off more than you can chew. There are limits to safe camping, and if it looks like snow or a particularly freezing spell then resist the urge to be a hero. There will always be more nights in the UK when it’s just right for winter camping.
