How To Dress To The Office On Your First Day

Getting a new job is a very exciting time, though there’s no denying that you’ll have a lot on your mind. From getting your paperwork sorted to arranging the details of when to arrive and who you’ll need to ask for, you need to be on top of your game. Of course, one important question is what you should wear for your first day in the office. You want to make a great first impression, and you also want to feel comfortable and ready to perform to the best of your ability. Here, we’ll talk you through what you need to know.

Firstly, it’s worth noting that it’s perfectly acceptable to ask about the office dress code. Before starting, call up the HR department of your future line manager and ask about accepted ways of dressing in the office. They’ll be happy to share a little advice and set you off down the right track.

Of course, the accepted ways of dressing in an office will often depend on the nature of the business in question. Those in creative industries, such as web design companies or graphic designers, will often have a very laidback approach to dressing. Jeans and a t-shirt will usually be the accepted attire, with a few changes for important meetings or catch-ups with clients. More traditional businesses though, such as accountancies and law firms, will often go for a more formal approach. Expect to see people suited and booted in their best outfits.

If you’re unsure about what to wear, it’s always best to err on the side of caution. It’s best to dress slightly too formal rather than slightly too casual, so wear something smart for your first day and pick up some hints and tips once you get there. A shirt and a pair of formal trousers is a great option. Click here to view the range of stylish button-down shirts from Ben Sherman.

It’s also worth thinking about more than just your outfit. Ladies should keep make-up to a minimum, and steer clear of too much strong perfume. Similarly, cover up any obvious tattoos before you work out the office policy on such matters. Individualism is something that many companies will celebrate, though it’s worth getting a foot in the door before you put yourself out there!

Finally, remember that comfort is key. Leave the deathly high heels at home, and pick something that you’ll feel comfortable in all day. It’ll be one less thing to worry about when you’re trying to make the best impression on your first day.
