Accessories for bride and bridesmaids – what’s too much or not enough

There is a hierarchy about where the focus should be on any wedding day. The bride is the star of this production. Even the groom in his tuxedo or morning suit plays a supporting role to the elegance and grace that is the bride. All the focus is on the bride as well it should be. This being the case, the bridal gown is the most important piece of clothing in the ceremony. That doesn’t mean the bridesmaids should not look their fashionable best. The bridesmaids and female guests need to take care not to overshadow the bride in any way. This principle helps set up the rules for the bridesmaids’ accessories.

Like many fashion rules in society, rules about accessories for the bride and bridesmaids are fluid. Much depends on the preferences of the bride. Perhaps the bride wants something trendy, extravagant and theatrical. Such a wedding would call for some serious bling. Most weddings, however, follow a more traditional style. They need more traditional considerations when making any fashion decisions including picking out accessories to complement the gowns. The bride should discuss this with her bridesmaids and ideally take on board any personal preferences. Searching for styles of jewellery to complement the bridesmaid’s dresses on sites such as eBay will give inspiration.

Paula Jones of the website Confetti advises that as far asjewellery goes for the bride, less is more. The bride’s gown should be the starting point for deciding her jewelry. If the dress is full of detail, spectacular jewellery will not add anything and may even clutter the entire look. The more ornate the gown the more understated the accessories should be. A delicate necklace and simple earrings will do the trick. Simpler gowns can afford more pronounced pieces.

There are many things to consider when accessorising the bridesmaids. Should bridesmaids have matching jewellery? If so, one way to ensure this is for the bride to give matching bracelets, necklaces, or earrings to the bridesmaids as a gift for their being part of the wedding. Bridesmaids should not outshine the bride on her day by being too bling!. It is the duty of the chief bridesmaid to ensure that all the bridesmaids are happy and have everything they need. Should one go a little bling crazy she and the other bridesmaids may need to give some gentle advice. However, they should also be careful not to add any more stress to the day than is inherently already there.

The choice of the bridesmaids’ jewellery depends on the style of dress, the dress’s neckline, and the colour of the dress. All involved should discuss these matters and decide on them well before the wedding. Don’t forget to consider the shoes, wraps, hats and anything else that might heighten the bridesmaids’ look.

Above all remember, everything is incidental to the main goal of celebrating the joining of two people in marriage. Proper planning and attention to detail with the right spirit will contribute to a seamless wedding day.
