If you have a driveway and live in decent climate, your garage may be underused. This space doesn’t have to go to waste. Some simple upgrades can turn a drab area into a sanctuary away from the activity in other areas of the house.
Craft shop or hobby corner?
This works best when you have ample lighting and suitable storage. The lighting may be installed professionally, or you can take the simplest route – buy some lamps. Cabinets are great for holding small tools and pieces. That way, you won’t have to choose between buying bulk, starting multiple projects at once, and having a clean and clutter-free home.
Entertainment room all to yourself
You may already have more than one TV at home, but with a household full of different taste in media, it may not be enough. Turn your garage into an home theatre. An extra TV and a set of speakers would be enough to submerse yourself into the TV or video games you need to relax. and that makes your home an entertainment space. Throw in a mini fridge stocked with your favourite food and snacks, and you may not want to leave your new found home.
Yoga studio/dance space?
This project is slight more ambitious as it will involve a change in flooring. It’s possible to just lay down mats from end to end. The extra bonus comes from having full length mirrors lining the side of a wall. That visual feedback is necessary when it comes to perfecting your moves. With a small stereo, you can have a large room that’s all yours to work out.
Greenhouse or potting studio
This option is great for those living in temperate to hot climates. The benefit comes largely from being outside. Dirt from potted indoor plants are always at risk or being spilled. Overflowing water can soak through and ruin the flooring or carpet. Small children or pets can severely interfere with your plans for an indoor greenhouse. The garage is a great alternative and a useful space. You may want to consider installing windows as garages generally aren’t built to let in much natural light. Otherwise, consider using plants that live partly in shade.
Sew to your heart’s content
Your sewing machine may be currently stowed away in a corner to take up less space. It may also stick out like a sore thumb in the living or dining room. All you need is a desk, and outlet, and a comfy stool to get started. With a few big bins for holding all your material and a small cabinet, you’re on your way to a sewing studio.
Have yourself a home office
Again, another simple project. The main purchases will be lighting, desks, and a chair. Also, for homes with cold winter climates, you will want a garage heater.
