Teenagers are not that simple a creature to handle. They are in a very sensitive phase of life where they care less for parental guidance and more for their personal space in life. They want to live the life on their own terms and they won’t tolerate any parental interference beyond a point. It’s the time when they search for their own identity and tend to show one or another form of non-compliance with the set rules. As teens behave differently than children, parents need to be a bit careful in understanding them fully. Rather than imposing their authority on them, parents should stay away from their ward’s way and rather wait in giving advice. At the same time, parents should be ready to handle a lot of emotional issues during this special phase called adolescence. In a sense, raising teenagers is surely not a cakewalk and it will take some doing.
While raising your teen, you should consider some points, including:
Give them some freedom
Teens need some space, or they need their well-deserved space in life. They have grown up and matured now, and their mental thinking has evolved. They have reached an age where they search for own identity in life. They need more freedom to understand the world around them and their place in it. Make sure that the freedom is of constructive nature and not lead them towards any pitfall or hazard.
Become a good friend
The most crucial aspect of raising teens is understanding them completely. It means, you have to think like them, not like a superior or a boss. They have reached at an age where they need some friends to gossip, share, chat, debate and play around with. If you can’t be a friend, let them find their own. The best strategy is to be a good friend to them, encourage them to open up and be a close confidante to them.
Make them realize worldly things
As a parent of teens, the earlier you make them realize the worldly wisdom, the better will it be for the family. This realization is basically about making them understand the world and its mechanisms, particularly about relationships, ethics, and financial security. If your progeny is aware of all these three aspects, you can expect them to have grown-up fully.
Let some rules be followed
Parenting is all about instilling in children the sense of right or wrong. No one is born to do right things only, but there is some limit to doing wrongs also. To stop your teen from crossing any limits, it’d better to set some rules and regulations and expect them to abide by them. It’s fine even if they break or don’t oblige occasionally, as in doing so, you set a right platform for them to become a better individual in life.
Risks, responsibilities, and guilt
Your progeny needs to know risks and their implications. S/he has to know the responsibilities expected out of them. And above all, they should be groomed and nurtured to feel a sense of guilt. At the same time, you can reward them if they fulfil their duties, and you should appreciate their efforts to make them feel better about themselves.
Be a role model
Teens often look up to role models to mould their life around. Why can’t you be the one? Even if you feel you can’t, make sure to be true to your words and actions in life. Just being genuine and true to yourself can make you a role model. But never ever try to be what you’re not!
It’s clear that parenting skills are tested when teens are not as obliging as they should be. So, be careful and try to play your role to perfection.
