Tips for better parenting

Being a parent is not easy. It takes a lot of physical and mental exertion to nurture and raise the child. It takes even greater amount of work to get good habits and ethics into the child and make him / her a responsible individual in life.A parent also has to play the role of a friend, teacher, guide, philosopher, and mentor etc. Whether you’re a mom or dad, the list of responsibilities is big and you can’t shirk them. You need to play, sing, coddle, learn and enjoy with the child.

In a sense, parenting is a full-time occupation where your dedication should never dip. You have to mould a character, you have to bring joy, you have to understand varied emotions and you have to guide someone on the right track.

There are a lot to do for any parent, including:

Connect with the child

Your first priority should be to connect with the child. You can plan some rituals or customs and try to stick to them over time to boost the bond. To make the connection, you can play, read, sing, watch TV, shop or do many things together. Such things work on mutual level and let your child feel bonded with you.

Understand your child

You need to fully understand him/her, you need to know the temperament, the moods, the likes and dislikes etc. Once you know these things, you become better equipped to implement a unique parenting style that suits both the involved parties to the core.

Set an example

Your child will learn a lot from observing you. And this can be a boon or bane, depending on which side of the fence you’re on. Morality, ethics, discipline etc. are some of the virtues that children gain through observation. That’s where you need to set an example. That’s where you need to be cautious. You needn’t be overtly bossy and yet you have to ensure that the child learns what are the essentials.

Set your child free

Yes, you got to set the child free and let her explore without any hiccups. You need to encourage experimentation, exploration and expression. If you don’t, the child may end up becoming submissive and timid. Let everything in the house is tested by the child in one way or another; never try to stop them from showing creativity and imagination. Let them learn in the way they deem fit.

Instil in them some rules

On the one side, you have to set the child free while on the other, you got to make them follow some rules as well. Freedom is essential on the exploration front, but the same liberty can’t be extended to those areas where the moulding goes. There have to be some limits and rules for the child to follow, else s/he will fail to understand the virtues of discipline.

Shower your love and faith upon them

Some parents often make the mistake of holding back their love and appreciation in the fear of pampering their wards. This strategy is fine but only up to a point; the love, care and trust have to be shown else the child might feel discouraged. The best strategy would be to praise and appreciate their best efforts and feel them wanted even if they do err sometimes.
