Busy modern life may consume most of your daily time at work and leave you with little time for yourself and your family. Parents are often busy working from early morning until late at night, while children have to learn all day long too. Everyone seems exhausted from trying to keep up with their day to day activities. Gradually, both mental and physical well-being may be adversely affected. If you find you and your family falling in this situation, it’s time to change something. A good idea is to find activities that you can all enjoy doing together on a regular basis. There are so many healthy activities that your family can all be involved in together, but below is a list of ten suggestions for you to try.
1. Doing household chores
First, you could look around your house and find plenty of things to do that every family member could help out with. Household chores are sometimes taken for granted and are still often seen as the women’s domain. However, those trivial tasks at home should actually be shared by all family members regardless of ages or gender, especially if Mum works outside the home too. It is not too difficult to find a task that fits one’s level of ability and interest. Have a list of household chores, perhaps on the fridge, such as sweeping, preparing meals, washing dishes, doing laundry, hanging and folding clothes, taking garbage out, feeding pets if you raise one, etc.
Assign specific tasks to each person so that they can be held accountable for getting them done. For example, while Mum is preparing meals, Dad could be helping out with cleaning the home, and the kids may be helping organize the laundry or taking care of the pets. The ultimate goal is that everyone gets involved in caring for the home. When you stand up to do something, even to put some toys away, you are exercising. Actively participating in daily household chores will bring your family together and promote healthy living at the same time. Instead of being gluesd to video games or watching TV, get everyone in the family to help out with their assigned chores, then after that enjoy some relaxing time together.
2. Growing vegetables
If you are tired of buying vegetables from the grocery store and want to supply your family with healthy foods, the idea of growing vegetables may interest you. It’s wonderful if you have a small garden for this, but if you don’t, growing vegetables on the patio or even indoors in containers still works. The aim of this project is to provide a healthy food supply for the whole family, so everyone should be part of it. Children are sure to be fascinated with it because they can witness the growth of various greens. Radishes and lettuces are quick growing vegetables for the children to start with. Adults can do tasks such as setting up pots or filling in the soil, while the children could be taught to care for the plants by watering, weeding, etc. You could give kids some plants of their own to look after and harvest their own products when they’re ready. Family members will get such pleasure tasting fresh and delicious vegetables that they themselves have invested time and effort into growing. You could even teach the kids how to make salads or stir-fries with the harvest.
3. Mowing the lawn
Do you own a beautifully lawned yard that you would love to keep looking good the whole year through? If so, mowing your lawn on a regular basis is vital. You and your family can easily keep up with this task instead of hiring someone to do it. The activity of pushing a lawn mower back and forth helps you to burn a great deal calories. It’s a pretty good exercise for your heart, plus it’s cheaper than gym! As an added bonus, as you focus on mowing the lawn, you’ll focus less on your stressful work issues and will come away with a more peaceful mind. Pushing a lawn mower requires a certain amount of strength, so it is more suitable for adults and teens, but younger children can help with watering the lawn, and clearing away the clippings afterwards. A green, neatly mowed lawn will be such a reward for every effort that family members have made to care for it. Once it’s done, you could have a picnic dinner on it or play a ball game with the kids.
4. Shopping
It is said that shopping is not good for your wallet, but it is good for your health to a certain extent and a chore that has to be done anyway. The fact that you’ve got to walk to look for items you want to buy, take them from display trays, and load them into the shopping cart is undoubtedly an exercise. Children will be excited to see new things and you can take this opportunity to teach them how to choose the best items on sale, how to follow a shopping list, and how to work out the best buy. They’ll enjoy unpacking the grocery items into the refrigerator and cupboards once they’re back home, too. This can be a relaxing, fun family activity, especially on a rainy day when you can’t go outdoors.
5. Walking in the park
Regular walking has a positive impact on overall well-being and there’s even more benefit if you walk in natural environments. Parks are easily accessible green spaces that you and your family could use for this super-easy exercise (almost everyone can walk, right!) What about starting a family project whereby you pick a different park in your area each time you walk? The kids could do the research and make a list of places, even asking their friends for ideas. The speed and distance could be adjusted based on age, physical strength or level of fitness, but taking a walk for around 30 minutes is sufficient for a healthy body and mind, especially when you are breathing in fresh air in a natural environment. Enjoy the green trees, the scent of the flowers, and the feel of cool breezes along gentle lakes. Schedule time for your whole family to take a walk together and see how enthusiastic everyone is. The kids will enjoy using a pedometer or walking app on their mobiles to see how far they’ve walked. Many parks or places of interest nowadays have geocaches, so that’s another interesting activity that you could incorporate into your walking.
6. Swimming
Swimming gives you a full body workout that is great for general health. Do you know that 30 minutes in a pool may equal 45 minutes exercising on land no matter how gently you swim? Swimming regularly burns calories, increases metabolic rate, and lowers the risk of diseases such as heart attack, stroke, or diabetes. Your kids should learn to swim as early as possible because it is a brilliant form of exercise without the sweat. You could swim alongside and teach them as well. Incorporate this exercise into your family’s activities and enjoy the amazing benefits it brings.
7. Trekking, hiking and mountain climbing
Trekking and mountain climbing may sound exhausting, but they’re activities worth trying for the experience of exploring new places and that wonderful feeling of accomplishment. Unlike walking in the park on even ground, trekking requires you to exert a lot more energy to move on uneven terrain. For family trekking or mountain climbing, start with low mountains or short distances first, and then increase the level of difficulty once everyone is a bit fitter. You’ll end up breathing a lot harder than usual, but that’s great exercise for your lungs too! There are plenty of interesting finds while hiking to keep everyone’s mind off the hard work, such as beautiful rocks, different flowers, or stunning views. Remember to take along a few healthy snacks to keep everyone’s enegry levels up and to keep the kids happy.
8. Bicycle riding
There are so many reasons why you should take up bike riding as one of the activities your family enjoys together. Bicycling is a great exercise of your legs and joints. Moreover, there’s a wonderful sense of freedom that comes from heading forward and enjoying the sights along the way. You could initiate a small race among your family members to increase the kid’s enthusiasm. Children can learn to ride a bike from a young age, and once they’ve mastered the skill of balancing, they’ll probably want to ride all the time! If you don’t live too far from your place of work, consider traveling to work by bike, not only for the mental and physical health benefits, but also for the benefits to the environment and the cash you’ll save on other forms of transport.
9. Bowling
For those times that you can’t do any outdoor activities, it’s worth having a few indoor activity ideas up your sleeve. Bowling provides great family entertainment, and is a good form of exercise. You’ve got to swing your arm to throw the ball, and the frequent lifting, stretching and lunging are good for both the muscles and the joints. What’s more, as a family you can compete with one another, and the game becomes more exciting. Older individuals can join with the younger because this game seems to fit all ages due to its low risk of injury and the different sizes of balls. You just need to be able to walk, swing, throw and watch to see the ball hitting the targets. Remember this activity for future family gatherings!
10. Going for a picnic
Having a picnic is a real social activity- you hardly ever see anyone go picnicking alone. For the family as a whole, it is an ideal way to strengthen bonds and promote communication. People will enjoy being out in the open air snacking on fresh healthy foods prepared beforehand at home, and perhaps participating in some fun games. Remember to pack a ball or two into the picnic basket. Stress or anxiety related to work or home is left aside and gives way to laughter and engaged talks among family members. It is such a great opportunity to break away from the normal routine of life, and to take time out to meditate a little. Plan a picnic trip and see how enjoyable it can be.
Conclusion
There are many more healthy activities you may think of yourself to do with your family, but the above top 10 ones should be enough to get you started, and will be so good for both the physical and mental well-being of yourself and spouse, kids, or parents. None of these activities are difficult in themselves, but the key is to schedule in the time and get the whole family on board. Don’t let the busyness of life rob you of your well-being and take away those precious family bonding moments, because your health and your family are among most precious things you have.
