Accessing the latest news stories across the world has never been easier. From newspapers, radio, TV, online sites and social media apps available at the flick of our mobile screens, we can now update ourselves on the most recent news almost instantly, wherever it takes place in the world. With so many avenues and sites we can access, which ones are the most popular in each country and across the globe overall?
Using Alexa website rankings, Ade Lewis Ltd has produced a new graphic identifying the most visited news site in each country, as well as the most popular sites across the globe.
When it comes to the world’s most popular news sites, the top five results reveal:
- com – most popular in 9 countries
- TV – most popular in 7 countries
- The Start Maj – most popular in 5 countries
- com/BBC.co.uk – most popular in 4 countries
- com – most popular in 4 countries
Msn.com, owned by Microsoft comes in top place for the world’s most visited news site, ranking first for an impressive nine countries, including Japan, Saint Lucia and New Caledonia. BBC.com comes in as the fourth most popular site in the world, topping the charts in the UK, Afghanistan, Sierra Leone and Tanzania. The top site in the USA is Espn.com, in Australia it is news.com.au and in Canada it’s cbc.ca.
In the UK, the findings revealed that people spend an average of 4.19 minutes each day browsing the top news site, which is considerably less than a lot of other countries around the world with the Dominican Republic spending the most time looking through their favourite news site, Listindiario.com. This time is a staggering three times more than people in the UK spend on BBC.com and for the country that spends the least time on news sites each day, Iran, it is over five times the time.
With the average reader spending time on a news site for 15 seconds before deciding to stay on the page or not, the length users spend on the most popular news sites around the world really shows how much they value the content.
