30 Years of Video Games (infographic)

The video gaming industry is estimated to have a global audience between 2.2 and 2.6 billion people. From action adventure classic Legend of Zelda to last year’s gaming hit Red Dead Redemption II, it’s clear that whether you play video games or not, they’ve become a huge part of our global culture. But which video games are the most popular amongst players?

Liberty Games have analysed IMDb ratings of every single video game from the past three decades to reveal which are the most popular amongst players. You can take a look at the full findings here.

The most popular game of 1989 was Prince of Persia, a fantasy platformer available on Apple II Computer, beating several other releases that year including Super Mario Land on Nintendo Gameboy, and Sim City for PC. The most popular video games in the early 90s, now over 25 years ago, are The Secret of Monkey Island (1990), The Legend of Zelda: A Link To The Past (1991), and Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis (1992). Certain video game series have emerged as hugely popular with several franchises such as Final Fantasy, The Legend of Zelda, Mass Effect, and The Last of Us featuring more than one release in the timeline. Unsurprisingly, having generated over $725 million in sales from it’s opening weekend, last year’s gaming hit Red Dead Redemption II was crowned the most popular video game of 2018.
But which video game is your favourite? How many of those in the list have you played?
