“Download speed” is a measure of the rate at which data can be transferred from the internet to your mobile device. This data might be a web page, a photo you’re viewing, or it could be a film you’re downloading. Over the years, the mobile wireless ‘Generation’ (G) has experienced remarkable change, increasing download speeds and improving our mobile access to the internet. But just how much has it evolved? Take a look at the table below to compare the speeds of 2G, 3G, 4G and the latest 5G.
If it wasn’t for it for these channels of communications and data transmission, we would probably still be in an era where technology isn’t as advanced as today.
Wireless communication technology inside mobile phones and other mobile devices have evolved over several decades. Starting with the then revolutionary 1G all the way to 5G which will launch with mobile provider EE on 30th May. Vodaphone is due to closely follow with the latest technology on July 3rd.
5G is the next generation mobile phone network and it promises much higher connection speeds, lower latency and claims to be more reliable than the 4G networks we have now. 5G isn’t just quicker 4G though, it’s built for both capacity and speed.
It will be much faster, with download speeds 5-10 times quicker than 4G to start with, meaning a movie will download in seconds rather than minutes. Over the next few years, it should become even faster, as the technology matures. It will also have lower latency, the time it takes for something to happen: tap a link and the download will start faster.
But perhaps the most important thing 5G will immediately do for users is increase the carrying capacity of the masts, meaning more people can connect at the same time.
To put into perspective just how fast 5G will be, to download a movie on 2g would have taken 4 days, 11 hours and 22 minutes whereas on 5g maximum speed, downloading the same 1080p HD movie will take just 3 seconds.
With the rate of technological advancements being what they are, it’s hard to imagine what a 6G or 7G may look like in terms of speed and capabilities.
